Wuchang: Fallen Feathersis a hard game. No one can deny that. However, there are levels of difficulty, and the difficulty in Wuchang is notoriously uneven. If you are hoping to one and done Wuchang’s bosses, you may find that possible during the first quarter of the game, but you’ll hit a point where that is unlikely to be possible. In fact, there are a handful of bosses that I have a very hard time believing anyone will beat on their first attempt.
Now, We’re not talking about the Man-Eating Dhutanga here. They present areasonablechallenge, but I suspect many people couldpotentiallywalk away victorious on their first attempt. This list is focused on the enemies with that I flat-out don’t think 99% of people are going to be able to kill during their first encounter. The ones I’d put money on. I’ll be listing these bosses in the order you encounter them, but, for the most part, that also aligns with their relative difficulty.
It is worth noting that there are many bosses I’m not going to all to this list that I think most people won’t beat on the first go. However, if I could see someone getting easier sequencing, or picking up on the bosses core gimmick, then I didn’t add them.
Bai Kru
Tutorial Terror
Let’s start off with an easy one. Bai Kru is a classic Soulsliketutorial boss.Just like any good first boss fight in a Soulslike, you aren’t supposed to win. You can, of course, if you are absolutely cracked; these aren’timpossiblebosses. However, claiming victory requires having a better command of your character than you are likely to possess at this point in the game.
Bai Kru is very clearly designed to kill you. They jump all over the place, are difficult to predict, and hits ungodly hard. You will face Bai Kru again later, and with your better understanding of the combat system, and accrued power, you’ll find Bai Kru very manageable, but they are quite simply going to be too much too early for most players.
8Feathered Priest - Lu Bingzhang
One Grab Is All It Takes
This fight is, for the most part, nottoobad. The Feathered Priest - Lu Bingzhang fights at a range, and likes to corrupt you, which is something that is likely to catch you if you are ill-prepared. However, that’s not why Lu Bingzhang is on this list. He’s here because of his signature grab attack, where he skewers you with his staff and then tosses you to the side.
Not only will this big attack launch you across the room, but you’ll most likely be dead by the time you hit the ground. Calling it massively damaging is an understatement. Once you’ve learned to avoid this attack, you’ll likely have an easier time, but that first step is a doozy. Beware the glowing hand!
7Bo Magus
True to her name, Bo Magus is locked and loaded with magic spells that’ll extend the range of her spear, she’ll send waves of corruption cascading down on you, and fire columns of purple fire your way. Causing corruption, of course. They love corruption in this game!
She’ll summon a group of skellies, who aren’t a threat themselves, but can pin you in place as she hops around the arena, because, of course, she is super evasive. Finally, she has a massive AOE attack where she’ll send down a giant, ephemeral, golden sword that couldprobablyone-shot you if you haven’t buffed up your survivability enough. The biggest strike against her is that you only fight her after you have fought considerably harder bosses.
6Feathery Ambition - Xuanyangzi
Two Phases Of Frustration
Feathery Ambition - Xuanyangzi is the big baddie of the game, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are more than capable of ending your run in short order. This big boy will swing at you with massive sweeping attacks.
He has two forms, both of which come with quite a bit of HP, and he likes to fly around the arena, making getting in on their far-reaching strikes a constant battle. When I say far-reaching, I think you are likely to be shocked by just how far his wing jabs will hit you from. That being said, he is much more readable than some of the human-sized foes, which makes him a lot more manageable. So, while he’s a fun final boss, he’s not among the hardest bosses.
5Commander - Honglan
The Obligatory Skill Check
So, up to this point, you could have maybe beaten any of the bosses I’ve listed here. I really don’t think it is likely, but maybe you are justthatgood. However, we’ve hit the point where I actually don’t think there will be many, if any, who beat her in their first attempt. Commander - Honglan is fast, powerful, and has a massive assortment of moves that she likes to thread into each other. She doesn’t have many tells, and she is extremely hard to predict. You aren’t one-and-doning her.
Honglan isthe Lady Butterfly of this game. She is here to ensure that you can play the game well enough to proceed to the next section, where everything is more vicious. And she’s more difficult than many of the bosses who’ll follow her. I’d also say thatHonglan feels extraordinarily difficult to beat without the sword’s ability to deflect attacks.I certainly wasn’t capable of doing it. So, if you are entering this battle with the ax equipped, good luck.
4Bo Sorcerer
Best Fought With A Friend
This one has a caveat. In my opinion, it feels like the gamereallywants you to summon the White-Robed Elder for this fight. If you fight her alongside him, she is tough, but manageable. Beating herwithoutthe elder, however, is an absolute nightmare. She darts in and out around the arena with her horrifying speed, she’ll drive your butt directly into the ground with her massive slam attack, andshe’ll use her powerful magic to manifest twisters that fill the boss arena partway through the battle.
But that’s not the worst of it. What makes Bo Sorcerer brutal is her HP. She hasso muchhealth. She’ll swat you a couple of times, and you’ll collapse, but you’ll need to land dozens anddozensof attacks to return the favor. At least the other bosses had the decency to bleed!
3Sovereign - Zhang Xianzhong
A Two-Stager That’ll Split You In Two
This is a boss fight that I actually really love. Some of the previous encounters had me pulling my hair out, but this one had me vibing. The attacks here feel well-telegraphed, and you’ll be able to see the windows where you’ll be able to strike. That being said, well-designed does not mean easy.
This is a boss that, quite possibly, hits harder than any other boss. Its also extremely fast, and fires lightning at you.Once you’ve killed it, the Sovereign part of the equation kicks in, and now you need to deal with a powered-up version of the Fierce Tiger. Becoming a fiercer tiger, if you will. Great boss battle, but you ain’t beating it the first time. Nor the third. Probably not even the fifth.
2Ming General - Liu Cheng’en
A Frigid Encounter
Hey, do you know what I love? Never having stamina in a game that is probably more dependent on stamina management than any other. His frostbite will ensure that you never have enough stamina. And running out of stamina in Wuchang is, more often than not, death. For that reason alone, Liu Cheng’en is, quite possibly, the most frustrating fight in the game.
Getting jabbed a dozen times, and then rising back up and immediately being hit by thesamebarrage of aggressive pokes, will almost certainly be the end of most players. He’s just a relentless, brutal, terribleold man. He’s the reason we have old folks' homes. Lock ‘em up!
1Vermilion Feathers - Honglan
Running Face-First Into A Wall
I am a simple man. I just want to live life and be happy. I want to be alive. I don’t want to be dragged through the mud. I don’t want to be stepped on constantly (not like that, you perverts). You may think that this is going to be an enhanced version of the first fight. Maybe they’ll give her a new attack or two. No. That’s not what this fight is.
Instead, you’ll be terrorized by a version of Honglan that mixes too many punches and kicks into her repertoire to be able to deflect consistently. Her sequences of attacks are varied, fast, and feel impossible to predict. You aren’t going to beat her the first time you encounter her.You could read our guide on how to beat her, and you still wouldn’t beat her the first time.
Vermilion Feathers - Honglan is the hardest boss in the game. None of the other bosses came close. After taking care of her, I sort of sailed through everything else.
