Phantoms are a mainstay of FromSoftware’s games. It has been present in every Souls game, allowing you to see the actions of other players around you, as well as examining their bloodstains to see just when and how they died, too. In Elden Ring, this remained much the same, but is this still true forElden Ring Nightreign?

By merit of it being a multiplayer roguelike game, certain systems had to undergo some big changes. That’s a given. Thankfully, phantoms do still make their return though not in the same way as they did in other games. This time around, red and white phantoms serve a very different purpose.

Are There Phantoms In Elden Ring Nightreign?

The short answer is yes, indeed they are. Red and White Phantoms are still present in the game, though how they function is different from before. In the original Elden Ring, White and Red Phantoms could both been seen in live gameplay, though you could not interact with them in anyway.

In Nightreign,White Phantoms function much the same. However, seeing as the world is randomised and that means the very terrain shifting at time, the occurrence of White Phantoms is much rarer.Red Phantoms still represent the death of other playerstoo, though you cannot view the measn of death anymore. That said, they are perhaps even more useful than just warning you of impending doom.

What Each Phantom Does In Elden Ring Nightreign

While Phantoms are a common sight in other Souls game, Elden Ring included, they don’t work the same this time around. A similar intent, yes, but with a very different gameplay effect.

White Phantoms

These are found in two forms - in the grassy section atthe entrance to the Roundtable Hold, and aslive phantoms you come across in Limveld.

Those found in the Roundtable Hold are static and serve as a means ofshowing the equipment that was used by a characteron a winning run against a Nightlord. They have no other effect beyond showing their victory.

Those found in Limveld are significantly rarer, and act how white phantoms do in the original Elden Ring. They depict the live actions of another player in the world, andwalking through them will fill your Arts Gauge completely. So if you see one, make sure to pass through them.

Red Phantoms

Red Phantoms, by merit of the games difficulty, are much more common. They depict the death of a fellow Nightfarer, though not in the relived fashion in the original Elden Ring.

Instead, they will be shown as astatic red phantom kneeling in the spot they died. You can interact with these phantoms tomake them drop all the gear the player was holdingat the time of their death. This can be a great way of getting incredibly powerful gear.

However, an extra stat will also be added to them - their Grief. Each Nightfarer has a unique Grief effect that will be added to their armaments. For example, Wylder’s Grief will increase Strength and Dexterity. It’s a great additional bonus, and it can be used by any Nightfarer that picks up the weapon, not just the same Nightfarer.

With all this in mind,Phantoms serve an even stronger gameplay purpose than before, even if they are significantly rarer than their previous iterations.
