The Shivering Isles DLC inThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remasteredstands out for its unique setting, where it is set in a world split into two contrasting regions: Mania, a vibrant and chaotic land of color and creativity, and Dementia, a dark and brooding place filled with paranoia and sorrow. Each side reflects a different aspect of Sheogorath’s madness.
As you progress through the main storyline and carry out Sheogorath’s increasingly strange demands, you’ll often be faced with choices that force you to align with one side or the other. These decisions have a direct impact on how events unfold, and the Cold Flame of Agnon quest is one such moment of choice where you will need to decide which path to take.
How To Start The Cold Flame Of Agnon Quest
During themain story progression of the Shivering Isles DLC, after completing both theAddictionandLady of Paranoiaquests as part of Understanding Madness, report to Sheogorath.
For your next task, he will assign you torelight the Great Torch, which willbegin the quest Cold Flame of Agnon.
The Great Torch is locatedat the very northwest of the map inside a fort called Cylarne. After you arrive, you will find two doors: one to the left for the Golden Saints and one to the right for the Dark Seducers.
At this point, you need to make a decisionon which side you want to join and help.
This choice affects how the quest unfolds and the rewards you will receive.
How To Complete The Cold Flame Of Agnon Quest
The Golden Saints Path
The Golden Saints are the attackers in this fight, and if you decide to help them, speak to the guard outside on the right side.
She’ll give you the key to unlock the door. Make your way inside andspeak with Commander Kaneh.
She will explain the plan to you, and you’ll need to decide how to approach the ambush.
The main option is togo through the main gate and attack. While this could work if you manage to kill most of the Seducers quickly,it can be a bit risky since the main passage is strongly fortified.
The other option is to take the advice of Mirel and prove him right:the Underdeep is a great alternative approach. Simply head to the Seducers' side andmake your way to the Underdeep to scout.
You’ll notice that Mirel was right - it is lightly defended, making it the better path. Head back to Kaneh andtell her that you’re ready to attack, but you want to use the Underdeep instead.
Follow the Golden Saints in their attack, defeating any Dark Seducers in your way. At first, there will be a few, but after you reach the Altar of Despair, you’ll need to kill their commander and the rest to complete the attack.
The Dark Seducers Path
The Dark Seducers are the defenders, and if you choose to help them, you need to speak to their commander, Ulfri, and agree to defend the fort.
Just like with the Golden Saints, there are a couple of ways to complete this. The first and most obvious option is tosimply say that you’re ready to defend. The plan will proceed as it is, with the Saints attacking from the main passage, andyou will need to defend against them.
The second path is similar to the previous one: you will want toconvince Kaneh to attack from the Underdeep. However, you need toinform Ulfri to let the Seducers strongly guard the Underdeep, which will act as an ambush against the attacking Saints.
Obtain The Flame Of Agnon
Whichever path you decide, once the enemy commander is defeated, the commander of your side will light the Altar of Despair, which will activate the Flame of Agnon.
All you need to do is exit the cave, and you will see the flame burning.Simply step into it,stay for a few seconds, and thenhead back to New Sheoth, Sacellum Arden-Sul.
Which Side Should You Pick To Light The Flame?
After you arrive at Sacellum Arden-Sul, you will have the option toeither light the Flame of Maniaorthe Flame of Dementia.
