Summary
There are many reasons to collectMagic: The Gathering, but there is even more fun to be had by playing it as well. The Commander format is one of the most fun ways to play thanks to the massive deck size that encourages you to experiment with cards from all over MTG’s history, by only allowing one of each card.
Across four Secret Lair drops, we got a fantastic bunch of cards with the virtual sensation and collab queen,Hatsune Miku. These brought some wonderful re-skinned cards of some classics, but none were as amazing as the cards that can be used as commanders. With a range of outfits and artists, these Miku cards shine in the starlight as superstar commanders.
All of these cards are reskinned versions of other popular cards, meaning that everything besides the name, art and flavor text are identical to the original card. This means that in Commander you can only have one of these reskinned cards or its original print and cannot have both since they are functionally the same card.
6Miku, Voice Of Power (Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury)
Singing For The Forest
Miku, Voice of Power, is an amazing reskin of the legendary planeswalker Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury. Being a legendary planeswalker, this card has three distinct abilities that all require specific amounts of loyalty to use. All three are really strong, and it makes Miku, Voice of Power, an excellent supportive commander.
The first ability allows you to create a 1/1 Elf Druid creature Token, the second allows you to destroy any targeted artifact or enchantment to control the board and the final provides you with a ridiculous draw engine which draws you a card for each green creature you control. Since this card is just a legendary planeswalker that has text specifying it can be your commander, Miku, Voice of Power can be more challenging to play as your commander due to it being more complex and unable to attack.
This does, however, mean this card also has alot more potential with its wide range of abilities, and it is a great card for green mana ramping in both early and late game. Being able to create a 1/1 creature token that can be tapped for green mana can easily help you get more expensive resource-heavy plays off the ground and if you build a ton of these Elves, you can then take full advantage of the third ability to turn your commander into the ultimate draw engine.
5Miku, Font Of Pop (Giada, Font Of Hope)
Angelic To The Core
Miku’s angelic voice sings throughout your lands to become an honorary Angel and empower your Angel creatures in this wonderful reskin of the white legend Giada, Font of Hope. Miku, Font of Pop has the same great keywords of flying and vigilance, as well as the ability to give any Angel creature a +1/+1 counter for each Angel you currently control when they enter the battlefield.
This can make the already powerful Angel cards become even stronger and create dominating threats on your board. Unfortunately, monowhite as a color is lacking in options and struggles in alot of areas compared to other colors which have one defining strength, but it is still able to have some great synergies.
By focusing your deck around Angel creatures, you may make something that works quite well in the late game due to how powerfully thisAngel commandercan scale them. White does have quite alot of protection spells, so if you can build a deck well and play it safe in the early game, you can bide your time improving your board until it is nearly unstoppable.
4Miku, Queen Electric (Brago, King Eternal)
An Encore Of Abilities
Shaking the world with her electric voice, Miku takes center stage as the Queen Electric of your deck with this legendary creature reskin of Brago, King Eternal. A commander is what shapes your entire deck in Commander and, with Brago, King Eternal’s ability, you can build a deck that will be able to spam its nonland’s enter the battlefield (ETB) retriggers.
Every time this card does combat damage to other players, you’re able to choose to exile any of your nonland permanents and return them back into play, also retriggering their ETB abilities. This commander is great for newcomers as it is very easy to get going and even build with little deck-building knowledge. Adding creatures and instants that are able to blink allows very simple ETB retriggers, and with the commander, you can get a ton of extra retriggers of key abilities, such as drawing cards or creating various Tokens.
With Miku, Queen Electric, as your commander, you can stay on top of your deck and keep your creatures at full health by exiling them and bringing them back. Being an Azorius (white/blue) commander means you also have access to some of the best control cards around to barrage your foes and keep everything running smoothly.
3Miku, Lost But Singing (Azusa, Lost But Seeking)
Singing Her Heart Out On Stage
Most Commander decks run a bunch of lands in their 100-card deck and this sometimes makes your draw feel quite dry when you have lands in hand and draw more, especially with the one land per turn rule. That’s where Miku, Lost but Singing comes in to make your board a land paradise. This card is a reskin of the great Azusa, Lost but Seeking legendary creature who has a simple yet game-changing ability that allows you to play two additional lands every turn.
While not the strongest commander at offense, it is themost valuable Mikucommander because this card is a supportive powerhouse that helps land-focused green decks excel past their foes and accelerate their board, giving access to quicker mana gain and more resources.
One of the best uses of this ability is in the Landfall and Ramp archetypes, where Miku, Lost but Singing is able to get down powerful land cards and ramp mana early to allow high-cost creatures and cards to be used with ease.
2Miku, The Renowned (Feather, The Redeemed)
Play It Back Again
Miku, The Renowned is a reskin of the great legendary creature Feather, The Redeemed, and this card has a track record of being a strong commander. Thanks to its ability, which allows you to keep returning certain played instants or spells back into your hand, Miku The Renowned is able to safely keep your best cards in hand.
This works specifically, whenever you cast instants or spells on a creature you control, allowing you to exile the card after resolving it, instead of putting it in your graveyard to then be put back into your hand on the next end step. With this ability, you can constantly hoard your best cards to improve and protect your board as well as pin consistent aggression on your foes each turn.
In a format like Commander where you only have one copy of each card in your deck, an ability like this is priceless as it means you can keep recasting the best spells and instants in your deck turn after turn. Combine some excellent Boros (white/red) cards in your deck that synergize with this ability, such as Defiant Strike or Fists of Flame, and you can give your creatures some nasty buffs and keywords as much as you like. Creating some devastating plays and horrifying strategies all from one virtual singing commander.
1Miku, Child Of Song (Child Of Alara)
Miku-Miku Beam Everything Away
Harmony is the opposite of what Miku sings on this card as only destruction is what comes from it. Miku, Child of Song is a reskin of Child of Alara, which is a 6/6 legendary creature with the devastating ability to destroy all nonland permanents if she dies.
With this card as your commander, you get access to this board-clearing effect as often as you like, alongside the keyword trample, this card turns Miku into a walking bomb of destruction. Being able to completely wipe the entire board of any nonland permanent is ridiculous in a format like Commander and Miku, Child of Song will not hold back any mercy if you face her as a commander.
This card is known to be one of the most frustrating cards because of the complete destruction it can cause, especially as a commander. Since you’re able to just bring this Miku, Child of Song, back after she has been killed as per Commander rules, you can make use of its ability again as many times as you like, with the only caveat being a simple increase in mana cost to bring her back each time.
