There are 60 chess pieces hidden throughout the system inDestiny 2: Heresy. You will need to collect all of them to access the community-wide chessboard puzzle in Eris’ Throne World. Most of these are located in The Nether, but there are some in Europa, EDZ, and The Tower.
A few of them are RNG-based, so it may take you a while to gather all of them. Collecting all 60 chess pieces will unlock ‘The Opening’ triumph and reward you with some Strange Coins. This guide will walk you through the locations of all 60 chess pieces that you may collect in Destiny 2.
Chess Piece

The first one isin the Annex. Head over to theDrifter’s room, and you will find it in plain sight.
The second one isin Zavala’s office. Head down the elevator (next to Banshee) to enter Zavala’s office where you will find itsitting on a shelf.
The last one isin the hangar. Head up thewalkways above the FWC building. Continue along the path toenter some ventsleading to thesecret‘Daito’roomwhere you will find the last chess piece.
The first one is at the Beyond, on a smallcliff behind Exo Stranger.
The second one isat the Bray Exoscience Facility. Travel to thearea with the large Clovis head, and you will find it sittingon the middle platform.
Similar to Europa,EDZ also has two chess piecesthat you can collect.
After spawningat Winding Cove, climb up thelarge cliff on the leftto find it.
The other one isnext to the portal leading to The Dark Forestat the Sludge. Follow the alleyway near the Cabal, and you will find it at the end.
Eris’ Apartment
You can find a total offour chess pieces in Eris’ Flat. There arenone in her Throne World.
The first one is on a table,next to a Sweeper-Botand some lockers.
The second one is at thetop of the staircase near two NPCstalking with each other.
One can be found on adesk in the living room. There should be an open book next to it.
The last one is on a stack of booksnear theShaping Slab.
Court Of Blades
There arefive chess piecesthat you’re able to collect byplaying theCourt of Bladesactivity.
One is rewarded forcompleting the activity.
Another one is acquired bypurchasing a random upgrade.
When you areon IO, go to theback-left corner after you spawn(behind some pipes) to collect one.
In theEuropa arena, head to thefar-left to find it tucked behind an ice-pillar.
The last one is located directlyabove the spawn-portal in the Dreadnaught.
The Nether
There are a total of24 chess pieces inThe Nether. We recommend launchingNether–Private to collect them at your own pace. Once you have obtained all of them at a spawn-point, continue to relaunch until you get another spawn-point, and keep on repeating.
The Founts
There are a total ofsix hidden chess pieces in The Founts. Most of these are near the central mechanism.
While facing the tentacles,turn left from the central mechanism, and jump through the wall.Climb the structures with Hive runesuntil you may see ahole in the ceilingwith a chess piece inside.
For this one,turn right from the central mechanism, and drop into an open area. A little ahead,jump up a large pipe in the cornerto find another chess piecebehind a Hive Chest.
Immediately after you spawn, jump up on thestructures on the left. You will see the chess piece in plain sight.
Jump up thetentacles overlooking the central mechanism. You will see the chess piece neatlytucked into a corner.
Whilefacing the Hive-door, jump up thesmall tentacles on the rightto find it.
Turn around from the Hive-door, and head inside thesmall opening on the right. You will see the chess piecebehind the door.
Mausoleum
There are a total offive chess piecesthat you can collectin the Mausoleum. Here are their locations:
Immediatelyafter you spawn,turn aroundto find it.
After collecting the previous one,jump up on the rock, and you will see it in plain sight.
From the spawn-point, jumpon the large tentacle, andcheck the back-left cornerto find it.
Head down into theboss(Ogre)arena, andjump up the rocks at the endto find it hidden in the crevice.
From the spawn-point, head straight to the end of thearea with large wires. You will see the last chess pieceon a narrow ledge. This is thesame area where a Solar crystal appears.
When you spawn,jump down to the rightto find it.
Once again, from the spawn,head straight toward the Skyburner corpseto find it next to the wall.
Head left toward theend of the areawhere you can summonVorok, Sentinel Eternal.Jump down on the ledgewith the chess piece.
Use the disappearing platforms to reach theroom with the‘Rites of the Deep’secret. You will find the chess piece right next to the secret.
On the other side of the Trenchway, head to thearea with waterfalls(you can also summon a secret Ogre boss here) tofind the chess piece in a corner.
Hall Of Souls
There are a total ofseven chess pieces in the Hall of Souls. Here are their locations:
From the spawn, climb thestructure on the leftto find it.
Headstraight from the spawn, turn left, andjump on the pillarto collect the second chess piece.
Go a little forward from spawn-point, and enter thedoorway on the left. Crawl through the tiny space, and you will see the chess piece on a ramp.
After getting the last chess piece, leave the dark area on the other side. Immediatelyafter you exit, you will find this chess piecein the distance.
From the previous chess piece, turn around, and enter thearea on the left. There, head insidea small room on the far-back(left) to find another chess piecebehind the doorway.
This one is on theright side of Thrall-hallway. It is also the entrance to theCourt of Bladesand theKing’s Fall raid.
Head to thearea where the final boss(Subjugator)appears, and go underneath the Taken Blight on the platform. Once there, pull out your Ghost andfollow the invisible platforms. The final chess piece is at thetop of the large pipe.
If you do not see any invisible platforms, you willeither have to reloadorjump up there yourself.
Drifter
You will getfive chess pieces fromThe Drifterin The Tower– one at a time. Collect pieces elsewhere, check his inventory, and continue repeating until you have all five chess pieces from him.
Secrets In The Nether
A total ofnine chess pieces are locked behind secretsinThe Nether. Once you discover a secret, you will have achance to obtain a chess piece as a reward.
To speed things up, we recommend doing the Toland secret, relaunching Nether – Private, and repeating it until you have all nine chess pieces.
Path Of Resolve / Ambition
There aretwo Taken Pathsin the Episode: Heresy –Path of ResolveandPath of Ambition. Each one rewards you with three chess pieces. Simplychoose a Taken Pathfrom Eris’ Flat,defeat enemies anywherein the systemto spawn Taken Orbs. Consume them (Path of Ambition) or shoot them (Path of Resolve) for a chance to get a chess piece.
It is a bit of an RNG, so it may take a while to collect all six of them.
Once you have collected all 60 chess pieces, head over toEris’ Throne World from The Last City. Go to thesecret room underneath the central platform, andinteract with the chessboardto solve a community-driven puzzle tounlock the En Passant triumphalong with a few other rewards.
