Wuchang: Fallen Feathersputs you in the role of the eponymous Wuchang as her Feathering disease increases. While this has caused her to lose her memories, it has also granted her some incredible abilities. As her Feathering increases, she gets even more powerful, making each of the game’s main weapon types all the more versatile in her hands.

Across these various weapon types, you have quite a few different skills you can use, as well as a diversity of movesets to complement every fighting style. That said, the game still wants you to experiment, so it’s worth actually learning how these weapons work, where they excel, and how to make them even more powerful.

How Many Weapon Types Are There?

How Weapons Work

In Wuchang, weapons work a bit like a middle-ground between Nioh and Elden Ring. Rather than each weapon having a unique or modified moveset for its category, every weapon within a category has the same moveset. Therefore, you may be assured that every Longsword will act the same, making it easy to adjust to a new one you pick up.

However, every weapon also comes with two skills- a Weapon skill, and a Discipline Skill. These give each weapon even more versatility beyond just its default moveset and stats. These are unique to each weapon, so it’s worth playing around with different weapons to see which fits you best, not just picking up whichever has the highest stats.

Every weapon in Wuchang is also unique. They have their own scalings and skills, and typically all come from preset locations. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about getting the right drop to roll the best weapon. Each one has its own niche to fill. Even better, weapons do not have to be individually upgraded in Wuchang, but we’ll delve into that a bit more further down.

Weapon Types

In Wuchang, there are five weapon categoriesin total. Here are all of them:

you may have two weapons equipped at the same time, letting you have different weapons to complement each other. TheSwift Drawattack, mapped to L3/LS by default, also lets you instantly swap weapons in the middle of a combo and perform your Weapon Skill, all for the cost of a single Skyborn Might.

The Difference Between Weapon And Discipline Skills

You might have noticed in Wuchang that every weapon comes with two skills - Weapon and Discipline. However, the game, early on at least, doesn’t actually explain what these mean, especially with it taking quite a while to find new weapons. In short,Weapon Skills are unique to each individual weapon, while Discipline Skills are unique to each weapon category.

For example, the first Spear you get comes with two skills. The Weapon Skill is Ebb and Flow, while the Discipline SKill is Aerial Bulwark. This Weapon Skill exists as part of this weapon, while Aerial Bulwark will be found on many different spears, or can be equipped toany weapon in the same category.

Weapon Skills increase in power as your Weapon Mastery increases.Discipline Skills are instead enhanced by unlocking new nodes within the Impetus Repository. These can grant them brand-new effects, which will be applied to any weapon with this Discipline Skill equipped,

Both Weapon and Discipline Skills aredesigned to be comboed into your regular Light Attacks. After performing one, you can seamlessly continue attacking with Light Attacks. This typically allows you to skip the first attack of a Light Attack combo string.

Each Weapon And What They’re Best At

With each of the weapons in Wuchang, there is a certain way in which you are expected to use them. They all have their own pros and cons, so we’ve given a breakdown of what each weapon is best at below so you’re able to decide which is best for you.

Longswords

The Longsword is the very first weapon you are given, and also one of the easier to pick up of the five weapon categories. The longsword has a simple combo string, mainly involving slashes in nice, wide arcs. It is a dependable weapon, though one that lacks some of the maneuverability of others.

The Longsword really starts to shine once you unlockthe Sword Saint node in the Impetus Repository. This makes it so that hitting an enemy with the second hit in a Light Attack combo grants a single Skyborn Might. The first hit doesn’t even need to land, just the second one. This makes the Longsword a nice, consistent source of Skyborn Might, letting you feed your Spells and Skill constantly without worrying about more complex methods of acquiring Skyborn Might.

Axes

Axes work exactly as you’d expect. They are slow and heavy. While their range isn’t quite as wide as the Longsword or Spear, they offer a bit more hyper armour to Wuchang, letting you tank some weaker attacks while dishing out your own. Where the Axe really shines is in its ability to stagger enemies. you may break their Poise relatively easily with a few attacks, and cancel their own attacks if timed well.

Another great aspect of the Axe is its default Discipline Skill, Block. Exactly as you’d think, it lets you block attacks, dramatically reducing the damage you take. You will still take some amount of damage, though much less.Attacking from a Block also tends to bring out your first attack much faster, making it a very effective means of counter-attacking weapons.

Spears

Spears are quite diverse in Wuchang, likely offering much more versatility than you might have expected. It is a weapon that hasgood reach, nice damage, and the ability to both advance and retreatwith many of its attacks. It’s an all-rounder, though one that requires awareness to use well. For example, its Heavy Attack triggers a slam while pulling you back, while its Charged Heavy Attack instead has you dashing forward for a multi-hit combo.

As such, you have to choose the right move, rather than just the strongest attacks at all times. Spears can also gain the Boldheart buff, which can be converted into Skyborn Might. This lets you effectively store Skyborn Might to be used at any time, giving you a source that is always available. The Spear is a very technical weapon, though one with plenty of rewards for those who master it.

One-Handed Swords

One-Handed Swords are a fascinating weapon type. Instead of the typical slashes and stabs, here they utilise many twirl and dodges. It is a weapon that wants you to move a lot while using it, ducking under attacks and repositioning yourself. It is also a very reactive weapon, with its Discipline Skill, Flickering Blade, allowing you to cancel an enemy’s attack while also dealing damage back to them.

The Biding Time bufffrom the Impetus Repository is its strongest skill though. This allows you togenerate Skyborn Might randomly just while you have a One-handed Sword equipped. Even better, certain attacks can build up the Biding Time buff, making the random acquisition of Skyborn Might even more frequent. It is a very proactive weapon, though its lower damage means you must be a bit more careful while using it.

Dual Blades

Dual Blades are a complex weapon type fitting more into what you might have expected from the One-Handed Sword. It is fast, capable of dealing high damage, while stillretaining a good degree of freedomin your movement. However, it is otherwise fairly safe. It is, functionally,a faster, weaker version of the Longsword.

That said, its Charged Heavy Attack are notable for dealing high damage, unleashing quickly, and immediately closing the distance on an enemy. With many other weapons, the ChargedHeavy Attacks have some close-ranged weaker attacks before the final strong attack. With the Dual Blades, it is one continuous whirlwind, letting you deal massive damage, both to poise and health.

Upgrading Weapon Mastery

As weapons are not upgraded individually in Wuchang, you must instead increase their strength differently. This is done in the same way as you increase Wuchang’s other default stats -by unlocking the relevant nodes in the Impetus Repository.

For each weapon category, there are multiple Weapon Mastery Nodes. Each one will increase your Weapon Mastery for every weapon within that category, letting the weapon and its skills deal increased damage. Nice and simple. That said, Weapon Mastery Nodes will typically needRed Mercury Essence and unique materials to unlock.

The other major aspect that increases the damage of weapons is theControl multiplier. This is basically a weapon’s stats scaling. For each of Wuchang’s main stats,a weapon will scale off them differently. The higher your stats past the requirements, the stronger it will become. This will have diminihsing returns eventually, but it can be good to check this out in advance so you may plan your journey through the Impetus Repository.
