Summary
A detailed video has revealed a bunch of new details about the cancelled sequel to 2005’sUltimate Spider-Man, which would have introduced a new playable character and featured severalMarvelcharacters, both new and returning.
Before Insomniac Games mastered Spider-Man with its recent trilogy of games, the wall-crawler had a storied history of being passed around from studio to studio. Perhaps the most important developer in Spider-Man’s gaming history is none other than Treyarch, who created thebar-setting Spider-Man 2 adaptation that many still consider to be one of the franchise’s best games.
Spider-Man 2 wasn’t the only web-swinging game that Treyarch made, though, asthey also developed Ultimate Spider-Man based on the comics of the same name a year later. Ultimate Spidey is just as beloved as Spider-Man 2, which makes it even more painful that we never ended up getting a sequel to it. That wasn’t always the case, though.
Ultimate Spider-Man 2 Would Have Let You Play As The Green Goblin
Wolverine And Daredevil Would Have Also Been Featured
It’s been reported for some time that Ultimate Spider-Man 2 was being considered following the first game’s release but,as pointed out by Redditor Pleasant_Incident_61 on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, YouTuber spidey santa recently shared an in-depth look at what the sequel might have been like.
In the video, spidey santa reveals a bunch of information about the cancelled sequel that comes from deep diving into the game’s historyand talking to Ian Hosfield, who worked as an artist on the game, and some anonymous Treyarch developers. Ultimate Spider-Man 2 would have been loosely based on the Death of a Goblin comic and taken place in New York City during the winter.
Perhaps the biggest thing the sequel would have introduced is a new secondary playable character in the form of the Green Goblin. Just like Venom in the first game, players would have had the ability to take control of the Ultimate version of the character and presumably wreck a decent amount of havoc.
Beyond the introduction of a playable Green Goblin, Ultimate Spider-Man 2 would have also had a ton of other Marvel characters, with Daredevil and The Hand appearing in the opening andWolverine even set to make a return. Kitty Pryde would have also had a supporting role in the game’s story.
Interestingly,a prequel to Ultimate Spider-Man titled “Battle for New York” was released in 2006that features the Green Goblin as a playable character. Perhaps it was made in anticipation of the sequel.
This all sounds great, which leads to one big question - why was Ultimate Spider-Man 2 cancelled?According to spidey santa’s chats with developers, the first reason is due to the original game underperforming in its sales compared to Activision’s expectations. The second reason is simply due to Spider-Man 3 existing and Treyarch being busy on several other titles such as Call of Duty.
