Summary

A lot was riding onLies of P, the hotly anticipated Pinocchio soulslike that proudly wore itsBloodborneinspirations on its sleeve (thus becoming the stand-in for desperate fans eagerly wanting more). When it launched in 2023 after a brief delay, it more than exceeded those expectations and was quickly heralded asone of the best Soulslikes not developed by FromSoftware.

That was reflected in its peak player count, opening to an impressive 19,618 players despite also debuting on Game Pass. But that was only the beginning for Neowiz’s first steps into the genre, aswhen it shadowdropped the first expansion during Summer Game Fest, the hit soulslike saw a major boost.

Its new peak as of two days ago is30,095 players, far exceeding its original figure, but even its 24-hour peak at the time of writing surpasses its two-year record. Overture is an even bigger hit than Lies of P was, and despite the initial hubbub about Neowiz implementing an easy difficulty option,a big point of controversy among Soulslike fans, it has opened to ‘Mostly Positive’ reviews.

“Overture Is Such A Fantastic Experience”

The only major point of contention, funnily enough, is that it’s too hard, with one review even likening it to the infamously difficultShadow of the Erdtree.

‘Too hard’ might even be an understatement if the reviews are to be believed, since one of the bosses has been likened to the infamous Malenia, while others compare one of the expansion’s areas to Arche Abbey. But not everyone is complaining: “The second boss in particular was fun enough [that] I didn’t mind spending a good few hours across two days fighting it,” wrote Spring Breeze.

Hauntingly beautiful conclusion to P’s multi-layered story that meticulously weaves past, present, and future through toy-box inspired set pieces — nomnombutt.

For the most part, the reviews are glowing, as players praise its boss fights (which are “somehow even better than in the original”) and “additional lore drops”, with the story being a highlight. Others are even happy to have an easier option, openly lowering the difficulty to make the DLC a little less frustrating.
