Whether you are currently in school or can reminisce about days back when you were in school, everyone hadthatteacher that the student body would have liked to avoid at all costs if they could. If you were one of those unlucky students, I know I was, well, you know you were in for a long school year.
Similarly,a protagonist’s or class’s teacherinanimecan either be the greatest mentor a student can have or be their first bully and set them up on the path of protagonism and put them in an “I’ll show them” mentality. Today, we’ve gathered some teachers who, if you’ve had the worst luck, you’d rather not lead your class for various reasons. Whether it’s due to their violent tendencies or their indifference, they are just unfit for duty.
1Koro-Sensei
Assassination Classroom
Hold on a second, just hear me out: yes, once he’s on board and teaching the class,Koro-sensei is a one-of-a-kind teacherwho takes this class of rejects that others have written off and gives them a second chance with true belief in themselves. Not to mention that he truly loves and cares for his class for the year he takes them under his wing.
But also, the constant threat of the world’s expiration date looming over your head doesn’t exactly create the most conducive learning environment. I mean, come on, trying to fit gunplay and poison in between studying for entrance exams and history is a stressful concoction that not just any student can handle.
2Yukio Okumura
Blue Exorcist
It’s bad enough that you have to go toschool with your siblingswhen they’re an overachiever and more popular, while you’re the older sibling having a hard time. But what happens when you’re both the new studentandthey’re your teacher? You’re never going to get that unique type of embarrassment.
It’s not just the fact that Yukio is Rin’s teacher and also his younger sibling; it’s that he’s being taught the art of exorcism, meaning that more often than not, Rin’s life is in Yukio’s hands. When you’re dealing with demons, that’s no small matter, but Yukio isn’t exactly happy about having to teach his older brother about demon hunting either.
3Yukari Tanizaki
Azumanga Daioh
Generally, you want a teacher who’s attentive, caring, and encouraging when teaching. Yukari Tanizaki from Azumanga Daioh is all of these things and more – when she wants to be. Have (what she considers to be) a ridiculous question, or hell, just let it be the wrong time of day, and you’ll get to see Ms Hyde come out.
She hits the students with a laser focus on Chiyo and all her cuteness. Then, at her whim, she’ll either teach different subjects outside of English or ditch the class altogether to have some fun. Still, underneath all the recklessness and apparent violence, she cares about class three as much as they do her –so long as they don’t have to be in the Yukarimobile when she’s driving.
4Eikichi Onizuka
Great Teacher Onizuka
You’d be forgiven if you judged Eikichi’s… licentious motivations to become a teacher at the beginning of the series. Yes, wanting to murder your studentsisa bad thing a teacher shouldn’t want to do, but it’s not easy going from criminal to the world’s best teacher, is it?
Sure, this is eventually about a teacher’s (and, by extension, class’s)road to redemption, but there’s a heck of a lot of wanton violence that’s being resolved, not to mention that he’s tortured his students. He takes the school of hard knocks a little too literally, but his students, and arguably the school, come out better for it. If you have a glass jaw, you might not make it, though.
5Professor Kakuzawa
Elfen Lied
Now we’re moving from the meaningful, but misguided, teachers to the indifferent and downright diabolical. You hear about it all the time: someone is bullied, a teacher is told, but nothing is done, and it’s swept under the rug. He knew who she was from the moment she walked into his class –he helped her escape from prison, after all, so what he did next was fate for him.
This ‘professor’ sedated her, took her to her lab, and proceeded to try and create the next evolution of the human race. Unfortunately for him, all this did was end his teaching career long before his tenure. All the better, I’d say.
6Professor Tomoe
Sailor Moon S
Don’t let the looks fool you. He may look like he is the head of the Death Busters, but, as with other villains in Sailor Moon, there is always more than meets the eye. He is not only a professor at the elite private school Mugen Academy, but he’s also its founder and lead scientist as well. All before the age of 35, no less!
Of course, none of this matters. Why, because the school is nothing but a cover and a supply of test subjects to experiment on. At least the other schools on the list so far are viable. This one is actively bad for your health.
7Genkai
Yu Yu Hakusho
Just because she had two of the best students of all time with Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuwabara, doesn’t mean you’re going to be cut out to endure her extreme training, let alone survive it. What does that mean? Well, mustering enough strength to gather your spiritual takes, a physical prowess your average Joe simply doesn’t have.
On top of that, even if you are physically in your prime, her spiritual training is life-threatening -something she warns Yusuke about right before hitting him with a blow to the stomach that could gut a lesser student. Yeah, there isn’t going to be a martial arts tournament in our future if we were to take her on as our teacher.
8Kakashi Hatake
Naruto
As cool and charismatic as he is, in the early days as a teacher, you have to admit, he gave off the aura of not giving much of a damn. Sure, he did the training, but it always seemed like he did the bare minimum and would prefer to hang out reading his… literature instead.
Still, when things get serious on a mission or in a fight, there wouldn’t be anyone else Team 7 would want to have at their back than their Sensei with his Sharingan or his Chidori to fend off any enemies. Of course, this was way before ninjutsu became earth-shattering, but that’s another conversation.
9Principal Kuno
Ranma ½
While not a teacher, his crimes against the student body cannot be overlooked. How can the students concentrate and get good grades with the threat of a terrible haircut mandated to both boys and girls alike? All because he wants to. That’s it. No rhyme or reason; no grand scheme, just a Hawaiian shirt, some clippers, and a dream.
Just what are those haircuts, you ask? Well, for the male students, it’s a down-to-the-scalp buzz cut, and for the female students, it’s a bowl cut. A. Bowl. Cut. What a diabolical choice. The power had gone to his head, so much so that even his son wasn’t spared the wrath of the buzz cut, and left because of it.
10King Kai
Dragon Ball Z
When impending doom is heading toward your doorstep, you want to get as strong as you can, as fast as you can, right? King Kai’s seems like the most straightforward means to go, right? But the journey is anything but. Snake Way is a hell of a trip in itself, and Goku manages to get distracted by…well, Hell itself. Once he finally makes his way to King Kai, he’s met with distraction after distraction: jokes as a training fee, training with bubbles, and even a monkey.
The whole Kaio-ken training arc was so infamously ridiculous among the fanbase that they ridiculed it for years, and it even inspired several parodies online that poked fun at the arc. It gave us the Kaio-ken, of course, and led us into the Saiyan saga, but it’s a class you still wouldn’t want to take, mostly because you’d have to be dead first.
