Summary

Metaphor ReFantaziois a turn-based RPG set on the diverse continent of Euchronia. After the assassination of the long-running king, you and a bunch of other unique candidates compete against each other in a variety of events that will affect their popularity and eventually determine who the next ruler will be.

Technically, everyone is eligible to compete in the Royal Tournament, but you’ll only encounter a dozen or so as you debate them in front of crowds and battle them on the field. While they all have platforms that would benefit a certain demographic, some candidates would be more detrimental than others if they ended up on the throne in the end.

Lina stands on a gauntlet runner before a battle in Metaphor ReFantazio.

12Lina

Marketing 101

Lina is a business-oriented eugief who doesn’t even really want the throne at all. She plans to use the tournament as a marketing tool to help her advertise her family’s specialty: building gauntlet runners.

With all the attention on the candidates during the long election cycle, it’s a pretty smart move on her part. There was never really a chance of her ever winning the tournament, but if she accidentally earned the seat somehow, she would probably just commission cool gauntlet runners for anyone who wanted one.

Julian gives a speech in front of a large crowd in Metaphor ReFantazio.

11Julian

For The Animals

Julian is a member of the Ishkia tribe, whose primary platform supports animal rights for all living creatures, including deadly ones. You don’t interact with him much during the journey, but you eventually learn that he is willing to go further than necessary to achieve his dream.

As much as Julian loves animals and nature, he despises anyone who disagrees with him. If you unlock the book The Magical Future, you’ll learn that he’ll even go as far as to kill anyone who doesn’t abide by his rules. Julian’s kingdom would be great for vegetarians and gardeners, but you might lose your head if you accidentally step on a flower.

Roger waves his hand in Metaphor ReFantazio.

10Roger

Rebel With A Cause

Roger Ward (often known as Roger the Libertarian) is a clemar candidate who intends to turn the government upside down if elected to the throne. Tired of being a victim of the wealthy, this ambitious rebel intends to eradicate all laws, taxes, and religions to create a free country.

This might sound good on paper to some folks, but it’s hard to imagine Euchronia surviving for long without these staples of society. The nations would likely descend into chaos rather quickly, and it’s hard to tell if that’s Roger’s plan or not.

Loveless gets ready for battle on a gauntlet runner in Metaphor ReFantazio.

9Loveless

Party Central

Loveless is a carefree paripus who is less focused on improving the country and more interested in raising morale with never-ending parties. His hedonistic plan is to turn half of the land into an entertainment district where the drinks never stop flowing and nobody has anything to worry about.

Similar to Roger, this idea seems okay on the surface, but it’s not a realistic path to a peaceful kingdom. Loveless has a few good intentions, though, as he planson treating all tribes equally under his reign.

Goddard prepares for battle on a gauntlet runner in Metaphor ReFantazio.

8Goddard

Respect Your Elders

Many of the candidates for the throne are just fighting for their demographics, including Goddard Gunnar. The rhoag man plans on supporting the elderly by giving them lives of luxury while taxing younger generations to support his ambitions.

It’s hard to tell where Goddard draws the line between young and old, but his idea of a country would only benefit a minority of people. He would be a decent candidate if he addressed how he would approach other issues, but his stubbornness towards youth makes him incredibly polarizing.

Jin stands on a gauntlet runner in Metaphor ReFantazio.

7Jin

Cheap And Cowardly

Jin is a cowardly man from the Nidia tribe and has zero intention of using the power of the throne to help anyone but himself. He is one of the most narcissistic candidates in the tournament and will sell out anyone else to ensure his own safety.

If you work on your bond with Neuras, you’ll eventually learn thatJin has stolen the relics you found for himand must take them back. If you confront Jin before a certain date, he’ll crumble in front of you and beg for his life, showing just how much of a coward and fraud he is.

Milo holds a flower in front of his face in Metaphor ReFantazio.

6Milo

Every Rose Has Its Thorns

Milo is a vain member of the Ishkia tribe who prioritizes beauty above all else. His entire platform surrounds an ideology about how beauty is power and why the two can’t exist without each other.

If elected to the throne, Milo plans on putting anything he deems to be beautiful on a pedestal, while anyone he deems to be ugly would suffer and lose all privileges. Milo has a hard time grasping the old “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” phrase, and his incredibly high bar would only benefit a small percentage of the population while everyone else withers around them.

Gideaux from Metaphor ReFantazio.

5Gideaux

Blindly Loyal

Gideaux is the captain of theMonk Army for the Sanctist Churchand primarily acts as Forden’s right-hand man. He only enters the tournament for the throne to help guarantee that his boss is the one who ends up with all the power. Gideaux spends most of the race in third place, though he always intends to forfeit the spot to the church if he accidentally wins.

Essentially, a win for Gideaux is a win for Forden, one of the worst possible outcomes. The only good thing about Gideaux is that he is mostly unaware of what the Sanctist Church is actually up to, and once the truth comes out, he immediately removes himself from the running and spends the rest of his time trying to clean up Forden’s mess.

Glodell holds his hand out at night in Metaphor ReFantazio.

4Glodell

Not Man’s Best Friend

Glodell is one of Louis' top henchmen and enters the tournament for the throne to help spread the word of his superior’s goals and ambitions. While Glodell might just seem like another one of Louis' goons at first, he is self-motivated to claim power for himself so he can usurp his leader and take all the glory for himself.

Glodell is interesting as he acts like just another bad guy, but his motivations are so personal and complicated, it’s genuinely hard to get a good read on what kind of leader he would be. While other candidates seem locked in on their plans, anything could happen if Glodell somehow won, and there is nothing scarier than not knowing what to expect.

Rudolf stares at the audience in Metaphor ReFantazio.

3Rudolf

Rudolf is a proud member of the Roussainte tribe and plans on making them the superior race if elected to the throne. He perceives all others to be an inferior species to the roussainte and would segregate them further than they already are if he ends up with power.

With a platform based on hatred and dividing people based on their heritage, Rudolf is almost as bad as some of the main antagonists, despite not having too much screen time throughout the tournament. His cold-hearted nature is polarizing, and the fact that he never smiles should be a sign to cast to vote somewhere else to avoid his reign.
