CD Projekt Redhas made no secret of the fact thatThe Witcher 4won’t be with us anytime soon. The last word we heard on the matter is thatit won’t launch any sooner than 2027, which isn’t surprising, given thatits reveal trailer was purely cinematic.

So, it came as a surprise whenwe got what looked a whole lot like a gameplay trailer at the State of Unreal showcase. Then,CD Projekt Redclarified that it was a tech demo, so this is more aspirational than it is an accurate demonstration of what we’ll be playing. Now, the devs have shed some more light on what this means and what they’re aiming to create.

The Witcher 4 Devs Explain What The Tech Demo Means For The Final Game

Speaking with Digital Foundry, several developers from CDPR and Epic Games answered some questions about the tech demo and The Witcher 4’s development. Here, they’re asked about the consistent 60FPS that Digital Foundry experienced when they tested the demo out for themselves, and it turns out that this isn’t set in stone right now.

“At this stage, we are perfectly aware that we still have a lot of work ahead of us,” says Charles Tremblay, VP of technology at CDPR. “This is a tech demo. […] There’s no combat, there’s a lot of things that [don’t] work, but still, the ambition is set.

“This is where we want to aim and we’ll be damned if we don’t try to get this game in performance,” he continues. “It’s too early to say if we manage to nail it, but we’ll work as hard as we can to make it, for sure.”

So, we’ll have to wait and see if The Witcher 4 will be as silky smooth as it was during the demo after all. When it launches, it will presumably be towards the end of thePS5andXbox Series X/Slifecycle, since it’s feasible that their successors will be out by then. A game of this calibre still pulling off 60FPS will be quite the feat.
