Be prepared to get a run for your money with some of the strongest villains at your back, while also having some of the strongest allies fighting at your side.
There are plenty of characters to choose from in the world of Black Butler. However, these characters are the standouts, whether they are human, demon, angel, or reaper. Which of these characters are your favorites, and which ones are you maybe discovering for the first time? There are plenty to go around, but we hope you enjoy our selection of the cast below.
10Baldroy
Tough For A Human
To be considered strong enough to be on this list and not be an otherworldly creature is a feat.He is a former military veteranwho may or may not still have a hearty arsenal on hand at a moment’s notice if the situation, especially around Ciel, calls for it. Knowing how Ciel handles business, there’s almost always a need for it.
If you need more proof, consider his recruitment for the care of the Phantomhive house. Baldroy was left in the aftermath of a fierce battle while in the British Army (as per the Anime canon, the Manga origin story is different for him), and despite the heavy survivor’s guilt, Sebastian saw the potential in him and recruited him to oversee the Phantomhive estate.
9Snake
A Planned Betrayal Turned Home
Snake living at Phantomhive Manor and becoming a footman wasn’t supposed to be a permanent solution. Snake wanted nothing more than quick revenge after what he thought was a murder done by Ciel. Once the truth had been revealed, however, he stayed and found a home between the boy and his demon butler. Being employed at the estate, of course, you have to be proficient in combat to a certain degree.
A renowned snake charmer due to his own snake DNA, Snake can also communicate with and control snakes. Though mainly used for recon, he can use them offensively, as seen when he uses them to murder on the Phantomhive grounds. Though he prefers to use them to talk with everyone, due to his inherent shyness.
8Agni
Redemptive Strength
Before becoming the bodyguard that he is in the show, Agni was a rebellious man who lived a life of desires and took what he wanted. He committed crimes and was eventually caught and sentenced to death for his crime spree. It was fine, as he had lost his faith in God. However, Prince Soma Asman Kadar just happened to show up that day looking to fight someone strong. Who he found was him, and saved his life by cutting his hair and claiming that was the end of his old life. Agni found his faith in Soma, andhas followed him since.
His martial prowess, while not of the same caliber as a Demon or Reaper, mind you, is nothing to sneeze at. He calls upon the goddess Kali when necessary, and unwraps his right hand, which had the power to even stop a blow from the devilish butler himself.
7Grelle Sutcliff
The Not-So-Grim Reaper
In the early seasons, Grelle was a reckless menace in red, and did whatever she wanted. She loved fighting and ending lives for the sake of it, and would even provoke those stronger than her, including Sebastian, just because it would seem fun to fight. Despite this apparent recklessness, she wasn’t without misplaced compassion. For a time, Grelle posed as a butler for an infertile woman-turned serial killer.
Her scythe is just as flamboyant as her red hair: a large, loud chainsaw. Couple that with her immortality and her reflexes, and her strength, and no normal human could survive her bloodthirsty onslaught.
6William T. Spears
A Grim Reaper Of Order
William is about two things: adherence to the rules and clocking out on time. If a reaper makes him break those two things or apologize on someone else’s behalf, his day is ruined. Unlike Grelle, he doesn’t take the same pleasure in violence as she does, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t unwilling to get his hands dirty either.
His scythe takes the form of garden shears, meaning that he prefers to get up close and personal when dealing with death, not to mention the same heightened speed and strength that’s par for the course of any reaper. Dealing with Grelle is light work for him, of course, but even with the likes of Undertaker and Sebastian, he held his own.
5Angela/Ash
A Fallen Angelic Entity
Even before fully knowing who they were and what they wanted, you could get the feeling they were up to no good. Ash, the one who reveled in violence against humans and demons alike, and Angela, the masochist who loves pain. It’d be easy to think that they are nothing but demons, but no. They are angels.
Fallen Angels, but still angels. They still have all of their angelic powers, but their purpose has become corrupt. They mean to ‘purify’ London, but through means of ultraviolence and mass murder. The ultimate in hypocrisy, but if left to their devices, they have the means with their reality-warping abilities.
4Claude Faustus
Another Bound By Contract
The deeper you delve into the world of demons, the more you find yourself around them. Each with their own goals and desires, and Claude’s has driven him to betray him in the worst possible way. Claude, by accident, tastes Ciel’s blood, and all hell breaks loose as he becomes obsessed with getting Ciel. This spider demon will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
Betrayal, deception, and even murdering the person he made a contract with, there’s nothing he won’t do to get Ciel’s blood and soul. Though he’s strong and can transform into his spider form at will, who wants to have someone asduplicitous as that as their butler? We’d prefer someone a little less backstabby, thank you.
3Hannah Annafellows
The True Puppetmaster
There are battles aplenty between demons, grim reapers, and all manner of creatures in Black Butler, but those who truly win the overall war, who have control and power of the situation, are the ones who manipulate from behind. Hannah, when you first meet her, is an unassuming maid of the Trancy household. That all changes when Claude acts on his Ciel obsession.
Even without her subterfuge and manipulation, she still has incredible powers, like the ability to summon powerful weapons, like the demon sword Leviathan, from within her body, and enhanced strength that can overwhelm even other demons if they aren’t careful.
2Undertaker
Experimenting With Life And Death
Undertaker grew a reputation as the best grim reaper in the underworld by bringing humans marked for death with minimal trauma and as peacefully as possible. Yet, this wasn’t fulfilling for Undertaker, and not long after, he quit to pursue his true passion: soul manipulation. He wanted to bring souls back from the dead and into new bodies. Something that is forbidden among reapers.
That being said, he still has the full combat capabilities of a reaper, complete with an (actual) scythe, combat power, and his pride and joy, his Bizarre Dolls. Comprised of corpses that he’s tried to reanimate using Cinematic Records, the soul that only grim reapers can see.
1Sebastian Michalis
One Hell Of A Butler
Not only is Sebastian Michalis an unparalleled butler and performs any task with perfection, he will perform it with a smile on his face and a wit that will leave most confused whether they’ve been insulted or praised. If Ciel has come to harm, well,all hell will break loose.
His usual weapons of choice are whatever he happens to have on hand: silverware? Check. Fire manipulation? Sure, if the situation calls for it, though inelegant. Ballet-like agility that is unmatched? Of course, what could be more elegant? Though he’d much rather get dinner on the table on time, he will show you his true form if you manage to incur his wrath. But if you get that far, it’s already too late.
