While the English-language version of the nextPokemon Trading Card Gameexpansion,Mega Evolution, is still a while off, launching on September 26, Japanese collectors are getting their first taste of the set, with Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia packs hitting stores today.
As the day progresses, we’re bound to see more secrets as to what the Pokemon TCG has in store for its new expansion, but one of the first discoveries has already come to light, revealing that the upcoming set will include anew rarity type, the MUR.
Pokemon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution Will Feature MUR Rarity Type
Mega Evolution is the latest in a line of stellar Pokemon TCG sets. It followsPrismatic Evolutions,Journey Together,Destined Rivals, andBlack Bolt and White Flare, and ensures that 2025 is going to be one of the greatest years the trading card game has seen. Many of the cards already revealed (and leaked) as part of this expansion look set to confirm that.
Prior to launch, Pokemon revealed Mega Kangaskhan ex, Mega Gardevoir ex, Mega Lucario ex, anda record-breaking Mega Venusaur exSIRs, and, so far, leaks have shown that at leastMega Absol and Mega Latioswill also get the SIR treatment. Alongside those, however, there will be the new MUR rarity, which presumably stands for Mega Ultra Rare.
This rarity seemingly replaces the existing gold cards, giving them a new (much better-looking) design. So far, both Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex have been seen to get this new design, which offers a much more immersive, more detailed look.
Rather than having the Pokemon on a gold background, the full card is gold, including the Pokemon, and they have a new pattern, rather than a shared generic backdrop. It’s likely to make one of the least desirable rarities far more popular.
It’s the second time in as many expansions that the Pokemon TCG has introduced a new rarity type. The most recent expansions, Black Bolt and White Flare, added the BWR rarity. This new rarity included three cards, Reshiram, Zekrom, and Victini, each card colored to match the Pokemon’s main color, reminiscent of the original Black and White base set.
Here’s hoping we can all overcomethe inevitable stock issuesand get our hands on this new expansion.
