Whether it’s your favorite color or you enjoy the shine, gold cards stand out as some of the most divisivePokemon TCGrarities due to their unusual appearance. Even if you’re familiar with thegold Secret Rare cards from previous generations,Hyper Rare cards switch things up to feature a distinct gold shading that brightens the background and changes the design.
Unfortunately, the most expensive Hyper Rare cards are constantly in flux, as they are often one of two cards in a set that features the given artwork, but changes the background. While their future is uncertain, these are the most valuable Hyper Rares thus far.
These cards are ordered according to theirTCGplayermarket price, which is subject to change. Any cards without a market price are not included.
8Basic Metal Energy: Shrouded Fable (Hyper Rare) – $27.41
Basic But Booming
While Hyper Rare cards usually struggle to maintain a consistent value over a long period, the Shrouded Fable Hyper Rares are holding strong thus far, though there’s still plenty of time for things to change. As they stand now, you’ll be surprised to know that this isn’t even the most valuable Hyper Rare Energy card from the set.
The simple and clean design helps this card stand out as a great representation of the Metal type in the TCG and is a cool vanity addition to any modern deck. However, Shrouded Fable’s lack of better Hyper Rare options gives theEnergy cards a chance to shine.
7Ethan’s Ho-Oh: Destined Rivals (Hyper Rare) – $30.67
The First Rival
While Destined Rivals boasts some of the most recent Hyper Rare cards, this also means it’s the most susceptible to price drops once the hype dies down. However, even if the prices fall, the visual appeal of these cards is unusually impressive, as the Scarlet & Violet generation revolutionized these designs.
Starting in Journey Together, Hyper Rare cards could feature iconic Trainer and Pokemon combinations, but unfortunately, this artwork also appears with the standard color schemes. While it’s uncertain which version will be more valuable over time, these new school Hyper Rares are likely to shift the general view on gold cards.
6Pikachu ex: Prismatic Evolutions (Hyper Rare) – $35.43
Lost In A Sea Of Gold
If you want an example of how a gold card can be difficult to discern from its background, then look no further than the Hyper Rare from Prismatic Evolutions. Unfortunately, this set changed the Hyper Rare formula, using silhouettes of the Pokemon and an overwhelmingly gold base color.
You can’t see Pikachu well, but even worse, this card’s design is the same as another Pikachu ex from Surging Sparks, still to come. With such an obvious comparison, this card is likely to remain second fiddle and will struggle to gain ground until Prismatic Evolutions regains significant value.
5Cynthia’s Garchomp ex: Destined Rivals (Hyper Rare) – $38.74
Destined To Fall?
Cynthia’s Garchomp ex is another perfect example of a beloved duo combining on one card, as they have in the past on some ofCynthia’s most valuable cards.Even though Garchomp is the foreground focus, both the Pokemon and trainer share a significant portion of the spotlight, and the background offers a nice contrast to define their features.
Expect Cynthia’s Garchomp to bounce around the price charts, though its price is more likely to decrease before it rebounds back up down the line. Value aside, this card stands out as one of the most visually appealing Hyper Rare cards thanks to the characters depicted.
4Basic Darkness Energy: Shrouded Fable (Hyper Rare) – $43.09
Darkness Never Fades
Basic Darkness Energy might not have been high on your list of potentially valuable Hyper Rare cards, but it’s another impressive surprise fromShrouded Fable’s most valuable cards. This version surpasses the Metal Energy by a significant margin in value, but there’s also a divide between their eye appeal.
The gold contrasts with the blue and black colors used here, and the sparkling white patterns in the background provide the perfect blend of white to complete the image.
3Earthen Vessel: Shrouded Fable (Hyper Rare) – $48.80
Still Hanging Around
Earthen Vessel leads the way for Shrouded Fable as the most expensive Hyper Rare card from the set, which is partially due to its playability in the Pokemon TCG.
This card also forms a nice trio with the other Basic Energy Hyper Rare cards from Shrouded Fable, since Earthen Vessel lets you search your deck for Basic Energy cards.
Even if this card’s value is likely to fall once it leaves the competitive rotation, you’re able to expect the lore behind its reign to remain, and might even contribute to a sustained long-term price.
2Pikachu ex: Surging Sparks (Hyper Rare) – $56.04
Ready To Rise Again
Speaking of sustainable pricing, the Pikachu ex from Surging Sparks is far from stable, as this card once soared well above the $100 mark, but has since crumbled down into the $50 range. While this valuation puts it at around 30 percent of its all-time high, there’s plenty of room for this card to grow.
Surging Sparks is undoubtedly one of the best sets to find Pikachu cards, and once this set leaves the modern rotation and goes out of print, you should expect its top chase cards to rise in value. If you want this card, buying it near its all-time low price is very smart.
1Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex: Destined Rivals (Hyper Rare) – $67.71
An Unstoppable Duo
Giovanni’s Pokemon TCG career is impressive, asthe Team Rocket boss’s most valuable cardsnow have another member to add to their ranks. Mewtwo joins Giovanni as this iconic duo gained popularity in Pokemon: The First Movie and has remained as mainstays of the series.
Even as Destined Rivals drops in price, this card has a high likelihood of rebounding thanks to the two characters featured and their popularity. Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex claims the title as the most expensive Hyper Rare, but expect these rankings to shift dramatically over time.
