The core of the Pokemon games all revolves around the type system and each type has its own advantages, specialties and even esthetics. There’s no better way to show your love for your favorite type than to play a deck themed all around them in thePokemon Trading Card Game.
The Grass type is filled with plant-powered Pokemon who are ready to use healing aromas and nature to battle. For those building a Grass-type deck, there are plenty of ways to make a beautiful garden of cards. Energy cards are core to any deck and there are many different designs that have been released, but none as wonderful at making your deck look special as the Grass Energy.
10Grass Energy: Fusion Strike (Secret Rare, 283) – $7.23
Golden Secrets Hidden In The Grass
The Secret Rare Energy cards are some of the best yet rarest of any Energy card, having an amazing foil texture and a fantastic golden trim. This sun-baked Grass Energy has sparkles that beam out of the card, and it looks wonderful with the natural green background color. This premium card was released as a part of the expansionFusion Strike, which has more chase cards than you can count.
Fusion Strike is one of the biggest expansions of the Pokemon TCG, making it rough to pull any particular card you want. Since this Energy is a Secret Rare, it has the lowest pull rate in the set, but despite this, it’s one of the cheapest cards you can pick up. This is due to it not being one of the overpriced alternate art cards of a popular Pokemon but instead just a humble Energy card that only players of the TCG desire.
9Grass Energy: EX Era (2006-2007 League Promo) – $7.45
Green Tournament Exclusive
The EX era is what many consider to be one of the TCG’s lows in terms of player coun,t and this affected the resale value of all the excellent hidden gems from the expansions released during it, as fewer people bought and played the TCG. This also applies to promo cards such as this wonderful Energy card that features a unique holo pattern.
This card is special in that the holo pattern isn’t one that other cards normally use and instead features a cracked lightning-like pattern made up of dots that just looks phenomenal when shining light upon it. This gorgeous card was only available to participants of official tournaments from 2006-2007, but luckily, it was one of the easiest to obtain.
8Grass Energy: Base Set (Shadowless Common, 99) – $9.06
The First Energy Cards Printed
You can never go wrong with having Energy cards in your deck featuring the iconic Wizards of the Coast design. The simple yet classic design of this Grass Energy is where it all began and not many designs have topped it since. While you can pick up a bunch of this design for cheap by buying any of the countless reprints, this version is truly vintage and has ties to the history of the TCG as it is shadowless.
Shadowless cardsare sparse cards that were only found in the first English print of Base Set and distinctly lack the shadow on the edge of the card’s artwork border. This slight visual difference makes them desirable but rare to come by. Base Set was one of the most popular sets ever but these misprinted cards were limited, and nowadays, many collectors will do anything for these versions.
7Basic Grass Energy: Paldea Evolved (Hyper Rare, 278) – $9.23
Growing More Refined In Each Era
Continuing on from the Sword & Shield era, now under a new rarity, the Scarlet & Violet era gave usgolden hyper-rare Pokemonas well as more golden Items, Stadiums, Tools, and Energy cards. Meaning that aside from the Supporters, an entire deck can be easily made out of shiny gold cards in the modern era. This is the biggest flex any player can make, and the Grass type is one of the easiest to do it with.
This Energy card fromPaldea Evolvedmatches up well with the golden Meowscarada ex from the same expansion and both glisten with their mix of green and gold hues. Like most Scarlet & Violet era expansions, Paldea Evolved has a gigantic set list, so trying to pull this card is tricky, but luckily, since it’s not an illustration rare, it is quite cheap to pick up.
6Grass Energy: WotC 2002 (League Promo) – $11.68
Nostalgic Bliss
This blast from the past is one of the legendary Wizards of the Coast era Energy cards, and it is lush with plenty of nostalgic charm. No matter how hard The Pokemon Company tries, nothing can beat the simple Energy cards made by WotC at being the perfect Energy card design and this one will transport you straight back to your childhood.
This card is one of the most vintage-looking Energy cards around, as not only does it have WotC flair pouring out of the design, but the holo pattern is almost identical to the pattern used for Base Set holo cards that we all know and love. You may want to go check your old binders as these Energy cards were quite easy to obtain, only requiring you to participate in an official tournament in the year of 2002.
5Grass Energy: EX Era (Professor Program Promo, 104) – $16.93
Vines Hold The Community Together
With events every year all across the globe, The Pokemon Company has brought millions of people together to enjoy the Pokemon TCG, and one of their best ways of encouraging this is through the Professor Program. This exclusive staffing role has helped keep the standards of the TCG high by getting professors to teach others and lend a hand at events. Of course, this is all incentivized with some of the most lucrative promo cards of all time.
This promo was given to professors during the EX era tournaments. Since the EX era was the first era without Wizards of the Coast, there were quite a few hiccups with the events and the TCG as a whole during this time. The Professor Program underwent some changes as well and the entire thing was quite a mess to understand, leaving the promos being some of the lowest print runs around, with very few people even getting their hands on them.
4Grass Energy: HeartGold SoulSilver (Common, 115) – $21.47
The Perfect Homage To Johto
For the HeartGold SoulSilver era, The Pokemon Company went all out on the Johto fan service and created some cards that are perfect love letters to the games. The Energy cards were no exception, these had more than just a pattern or color, but instead a background featuring locations from Johto along with beloved Pokemon from the Generation, in a simple yet effective silhouette style.
This Grass Energy features the perfect representation of Generation Two’s nature, with both Celebi and the iconic Ilex Forest where you encounter it shown in the silhouettes. This event is extremely recognizable, and it makes this Energy card one of the coolest from a design standpoint, and this Grass one is just extra perfect for including Celebi.
3Grass Energy: Guardians Rising (Secret Rare, 167) – $26.46
Luscious Golden Plantation
TheSun & Moon eramixed up a bunch of classic elements of the TCG in a new way, including the introduction of GX Pokemon and rainbow rare cards as well as the still around to this day golden secret rare Energy cards. These elusive cards have been in nearly every expansion since their introduction in Sun & Moon Base Set, and we cannot get enough of them.
Guardians Rising brought along four more of these Secret Rare Energy cards, and this Grass type was one of them. Unfortunately, Guardians Rising was an unpopular expansion when it released due to having nothing exciting to pull aside these Energy cards. At the time, they were still a new concept that every player wanted to flex on their competition.
2Grass Energy: Scarlet & Violet (2023 Professor Program Promo, 1) – $37.74
The Very First Of Its Era
The Pokemon Professor Program is one of the best things that The Pokemon Company does to help grow the TCG community. This exclusive role allows devoted players to become staff for official TCG events to help in any of the various roles, such as officiating matches or teaching new players, and in exchange they receive some goodies, including exclusive cards.
This was the very first Professor Program promo of the Scarlet & Violet era, and while the Energy set may have been some of the easiest of the promos to obtain, becoming a professor is not. This role requires a full background check as well as a history in the Pokemon TCG community,y meaning only the most dedicated of fans will even get a chance to become one of The Pokemon Company’s esteemed professors.
1Grass Energy: Call Of Legends (Play! Pokemon Promo, 88) – $63.43
A Card Of Legend
The most valuable cards tend to be promo cards from tournament-related events due to how limited the print runs of each card can be. From having to win an entire championship to just participating in your local weekly, Play! Pokemon promos are given out all over the place, and this Grass Energy is one of the most limited due to how small the community was at the time.
The wonderful holo foil on this card adds an extra shine that makes the silhouette of Celebi and Ilex Forest burst out of it as you reflect light on it. Luckily for those who love the design of this card and want some in their deck without having to eat ice soup for a month just to buy it, the original print of this card from Call of Legends is much cheaper.
