The release of the Sun & Moon video games introduced dozens of new characters to thePokemon TCG,with the themes centering around the Hawaiian-inspired island of Alola. Whether you prefer trainers or Pokemon, Alola offers an impressive blend of valuable cards to enjoy, featuring some of the best choices in each category.
Without a doubt, two characters stand out from the pack: Mimikyu and Lillie, as these two claim the majority of spots among the most valuable Alolan cards. While there are plenty of cameo appearances from other Pokemon, including those not from Alola, get ready to see plenty of poses featuring the aforementioned characters.
Cards are ordered according to theirTCGplayermarket prices, which are subject to change over time. Only cards that feature an Alolan Pokemon or Trainer in the artwork were considered. Any cards with multiple trainers or without a market price were not considered.
8Gengar & Mimikyu GX: Team Up (Secret Rare) – $187.32
Secret’s Out
Gengar might just be a visitor in this region, but it gains entry to this Alolan-exclusive party by latching onto arguably the most popular Pokemon to emerge from Alola: Mimikyu.Team Up is packed with valuable cards, and while this card’s nearly $200 value is seriously impressive, that set boasts some of themost valuable cards from the entire Sun & Moon era.
If you’re a fan of this duo, then you’re in luck because this isn’t the last you’ll see of them, as Mimikyu and Gengar are the most prominently featured Pokemon here. Despite the beautiful sun that shines brightly in the Alolan sky, this region also has a soft spot for spooky Ghost-type Pokemon in addition to these two.
7Raichu & Alolan Raichu GX: Unified Minds (Alternate Art) – $210.60
A Lone Alolan Form
Raichu and Alolan Raichu form the second Alolan and Kanto pairing, with each Raichu form appearing in this sunny summer scene. The first card featured Pokemon that favor the moon, but there’s no doubt that these two prefer the sun based on the beautiful background here.
While Pikachu will always be the preferred form of this evolutionary line, Raichu and its Alolan twin deserve plenty of love, as they receive it here to the tune of a value hovering above the $200 mark. Unfortunately, Raichu doesn’t boast the same level of popularity as the Ghost-type pairing.
6Gengar & Mimikyu GX: Team Up (Ultra Rare) – $218.33
Expect More Mimikyu Mania
Speaking of our favorite Ghost-type duo, another Gengar and Mimikyu card stamps its mark on the most valuable Alolan Pokemon TCG cards of all time, with this valuable Ultra Rare. Mimikyu enjoys a seat on Gengar’s head, as the miniature Pikachu imitator mostly fades into the background here.
Despite getting a much smaller share of the spotlight, Mimikyu’s appearance here is adorable and completes the scene with a goofy tone, which would’ve been much different if Gengar were the sole subject on the card. As it stands, these two help to provide the perfect balance for each other in another great art.
5Gengar & Mimikyu GX: Team Up (Full Art) – $272.20
More Mimikyu
Don’t worry, we promise there are other Pokemon on the list of valuable Alolan cards other than Gengar & Mimikyu, but we have to acknowledge their complete takeover of the bottom half thus far, claiming the majority of the available spots thus far with superb artwork and color choices.
Despite featuring a much plainer background than the previous Gengar card, this full-art version climbs to a noticeably higher value, perhaps thanks to the balance struck between Gengar and Mimikyu here, as they return to a more equitable share of the spotlight.
4Solgaleo & Lunala GX: Cosmic Eclipse (Full Art) – $324.50
The Whole Alolan Team
Solgaleo & Lunala GX ups the ante significantly on the back of this gorgeous full-art card that perfectly balances its three subjects, giving Lillie a leading role in front of the two Alolan box legendary Pokemon. The sun and moon combine in this card, with the former shining through on the bottom while the latter glows on the upper right.
It’s nearly impossible to imagine a more perfect embodiment of the Sun & Moon era, with these two Pokemon and their trainer standing out from the pack as some of the most recognizable faces from the region.
3Clefairy (Dream League): Sun & Moon Promos (Promo) – $356.00
The Lone Exception
While Lillie isn’t technically named in the title of thisvaluable Sun & Moon era promo cardeither, she makes another prominent appearance and influences the sky-high price tag of this rare Japanese card. As the sole Japanese inclusion, this card stands out as the odd one, but deserves an inclusion given Lillie’s major role in its valuation.
While this isn’t the only time we see these two appear together, it’s easily their most valuable version, and earns them a top-three spot among the most valuable Alolan Pokemon cards.
2Lillie: Ultra Prism (Full Art) – $517.60
Rising Back To Prominence
The good times keep rolling for Lillie, as she finally claims her spot with a card where she is the only subject – what a rarity. This Ultra Prism full art isone of the most expensive Lillie cards of all time, and will remain as one of the most recognizable Alolan Pokemon TCG cards for years to come.
While trainer cards previously soared, then slumped after their meteoric rise, Lillie continues to defy expectations on the back of beautiful card art, like this gem from Ultra Prism.
1Gengar & Mimikyu GX: Team Up (Alternate Art) – $767.01
The Superior Version
What more is left to say about Gengar & Mimikyu? These two ghosts have taken the world by storm, and own a significant amount of real estate among the best Alolan Pokemon cards of all time, all thanks to the varied, gorgeous artworks that appear in the Team Up set.
While this is the darkest iteration thus far, the art style and close-up of the two Pokemon make it easy to appreciate every facet of their designs. With over $200 separating this card from the next closest competitor, it’s likely to retain the Alolan crown for years to come.
