The Sun & Moon era of thePokemon TCGchanged the hobby forever with the introduction of Tag Team cards, whichappeared as both valuable promo cardsand rare hits in the legendary Team Up set. While you’re probably well-acquainted withthe most valuable cards from Team Up,some fantastic Tag Teams fly under the radar.
These underrated Tag Team cards might not command the $2,000 price tag that the Latias & Latios GX does, but they still feature some of the most popular Pokemon in the series. Whether you’re looking for cheap alternatives to the heavy hitters or you’re a fan of unusual duos, you’ll love these underrated Tag Team cards.
Cards are ordered according to theirTCGplayermarket prices. Only cards under $100 at the time of writing are included as ‘affordable’. Any cards without a market price were not included.
8Pikachu & Zekrom GX: Team Up (Ultra Rare) – $35.94
An Electrifying Combination
Pikachu might boast one of the most valuable collections of cardsever seen in the Pokemon TCG, but its Tag Team appearance alongside Zekrom is one of the best artworks available at an affordable price. While Zekrom isn’t a detriment per se, this card likely won’t ever soar to the heights it might have in other circumstances.
But that’s okay – it’s great news that this card is likely to remain in a decent price range, considering the popularity of Zekrom compared to Pikachu.
It’s certain that this card’s value, along with the others on this list, will rise, but they won’t overtake the more expensive versions ahead of them.
7Lucario & Melmetal GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $43.16
Cold As Steel
Lucario & Melmetal are partnered here thanks to their shared Steel typing, but there aren’t many other instances of these two appearing together in any Pokemon media. Even though they’re not typically paired together, the combination works by combining two extremely cool Pokemon and putting them in epic poses.
While they each look ready for a fight, you won’t need to beat yourself up for purchasing this card, as it stands at a fairly tame price compared to some of the other Tag Team cards leading the pack.
6Celebi & Venusaur GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $65.90
In Season
Another unlikely duo in the form of Celebi & Venusaur makes an appearance as one of the most overlooked Tag Teams thus far. While each Pokemon boasts impressive popularity, their alliance didn’t send prices to the moon, even though this card’s roughly $65+ value is nothing to scoff at.
Tag Team cards are steadily rising in price, so while this card and the ones to follow aren’t necessarily cheap, they still offer gorgeous artwork for a more reasonable price. However, Venusaur & Celebi are likely to rise to impressive heights as these cards become more difficult to find.
5Magikarp & Wailord GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $69.20
Swimming Upstream
Magikarp & Wailord made a splash with their incredibly valuable Alternate Art, but this promo version offers a funny depiction of the two aquatic friends at a decent price. While $70 might be a bargain by the time you’re reading this, it’s still a great value when you consider that the best version will cost hundreds of dollars more.
If you love Magikarp & Wailord but don’t love spending tons of money on colorful cardboard, then this card is your best secondary option. Plus, this scene’s style offers something different to expand upon the wonderful relationship these two Pokemon seem to have.
4Latias & Latios GX: Team Up (Full Art) – $74.12
An Affordable Alternative
While the Latias & Latios Alternate Art leads the way amongthe most valuable Tag Team cards, this full art version sits at a fraction of that card’s price. While the background’s sickly green color leaves a lot to be desired as far as color choices, it does allow the Pokemon to shine without blending in.
Repulsive background aside, this card is incredibly affordable compared to its Alternate Art version, and is likely one of the few options you’ll have if you want to collect these Pokemon without breaking the bank.
3Espeon & Deoxys GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $78.09
Psyched Up
Espeon and Deoxys are two of the most powerful Psychic-type Pokemon in the series, though there’s not much doubt that Deoxys could wipe the floor with this pink Eeveelution. Battle prowess aside, you’ll struggle to find a more epic moment depicted in any of the best Tag Team cards.
Espeon & Deoxys' groundbreaking scene offers an epic look at the interaction between these Pokemon. While it’s unclear if they’re battling or if Espeon just witnessed Deoxys' sudden appearance, there’s no doubt that this scene is one of the best you’ll see in any Tag Team.
2Garchomp & Girtina GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $87.76
A Ferocious Battle
Garchomp & Giratina are the most unlikely duo you’ll find among the most underrated Tag Team cards, as these Pokemon only appear together thanks to their shared Dragon typing. Even so, Giratina is known more for its primary Ghost typing, while Garchomp leans into Ground as its secondary typing.
Despite what sets them apart from each other, both of these Pokemon are incredibly powerful in their own ways, with Garchomp as a master of the physical realm, with Giratina representing the same for its dark dimension.
1Snorlax & Eevee GX: SM Promos (Promo) – $93.10
The Perfect Derpy Duo
Snorlax & Eevee appear together on multiple Tag Team cards, but none are as derpy and adorable as the incredibly unique interpretation in this promo. While the art style might not be for everyone, the cute moment of Eevee and Snorlax enjoying what appears to be some Sitrus berries is adorably sweet.
Unfortunately, if you’re looking for a bargain, this card isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s far more affordable than the similar options you’ll see in the triple digits. Scoop this card up while you can, as it’s likely to reach the $100 mark soon.
