The King Is Watchingis a pretty apt name for this game, because the King is, indeed, watching. And the King you choose to have watching is going to have a huge impact on how your Kingdom pans out, deciding whether it stands the test of time, or crumbles under the weight of the Goblin’s onslaught.
There aren’t too many different Kings to unlock; counting King Baldwin, who you start the game with, there are seven overall. For contrast, there are nearly30 different Advisorsto choose from. But, each King has very different abilities at their disposal, some of which are more useful than others.
King Tier List
Since there areonly seven Kings, these tiers are going to be a little bare, with only one King in certain tiers. It’s also worth mentioning that there is tremendous depth in the build diversity that you’re able to achieve in The King Is Watching, and this makesevery King worth using in specific instances.
Kings in this list will be ranked by how often their abilities are generally useful, and not how powerful they can be at their absolute peak. Some Kings have abilities that function slightly out of your control, and that makes them vary wildly in terms of efficacy.
S-Tier
The Kings in this tier areuseful in just about any scenario, and are a good way of becoming familiar with a new step-up in difficulty.
Baldwin
Baldwin is the perfect kind of King; hefits well into the early game, allowing you enough almost free Troops that he can focus on establishing early production, but his other abilitiesallow him to produce significantly more resources and snowball that into a formidable force.
Leonid
Leonid particularly shines inmaking his mid-and-late-game Troops extremely difficult to kill. Combine his HP-boosting ability with Hospitals and/or Healing Mages, and he can have an army that’s difficult to put down.
A-Tier
Kings in this tier can still be great, but in general, their ceiling is a bit lower than those in the S-Tier. They’re still very usable, and can easily tackle higher difficulties.
Brezhnius
Brezhnius ismore focused on being an offensive force, with abilities tailored to getting a lot of use out of each Troop, and not on generating resources.
Leo The Wise
Leo The Wise is going toget more powerful the later the match goes with regard to his morale, and he can summon extra units to help him without much trouble. He needs a good build around him, but he can accentuate most builds easily.
Alucard
Alucard isbest suited for a build utilizing undead Troops, but in that instance, he’s quite good. He can make use of Troops after their death, and he can upgrade undead Troops to ensure they stay undead, and don’t simply become dead.
B-Tier
These Kings can both be extremely good, butquite a bit of their efficacy relies on getting lucky with a random mechanic. This can mean you luck out, but it can also mean you don’t get anything useful and fall into mediocrity, too.
Spellus
With a build focus on utilizing spells, Spellus can be absolutely great. The issue with him is thatyou don’t know what spell you’re going to get. You could get great spells or useless spells, and the fact that’s outside your control makes him difficult to put higher on the list.
Saladin
Saladin has much the same problem that Spellus does:you can’t choose what it is that you get out of his abilities. Sometimes you’re going to get a string of good luck and receive blueprints and Troops that you want. But that door swings both ways, and it can become a real detriment to you, too.
You can unlock new Kings by completing runs and finishing challenges. This will earn you both varieties of currency you need to unlock new Kings, which are then found in the Green upgrade tree. These Kings are in two different paths, and have to be unlocked in order on each path.
