Every moment of gameplay inThe King Is Watchingcomes down to knowing which buildings need to be active and when. There are a lot more resources in the game than you can ever hope to produce at once, so you need to specialize and build around setting up an army that can defend your castle from ever-growing enemy forces.
Knowing what each resource is useful for (and what it isn’t) can help you plan your city in advance, setting up a long-term plan that will help you handle late-game threats. Here’s everything you need to know.
Every Resource In The King Is Watching
Each of the game’s14 available resourceshas several applications. Buildings and units have diverse costs and requirements, so you might find some unexpected opportunities or bottlenecks on each run. In general, though, most resources have one or two primary uses, while any other applications are more like corner cases.
Basic Resources
Basic Resources areextracted directly from a building, with no input cost; as long as you can pay up-front to construct the necessary building, the associated resource will be produced as long as your Gaze keeps the building active.
Building and supplying structures that produce other resources.
Recruiting Warriors and some Ranged units.
Producing Wine, recruiting Veteran-tier units.
Advanced Resources
Advanced Resources have to berefined from other goods via specific Advanced Production buildings; otherwise, the only way to get them is through events or Wandering Traders. They’re rare and expensive to produce, but allow for powerful units and castle improvements.
Building and supplying Veteran- and Elite-tier Barracks, selling at Market.
Meat
Fisherman’s Hut, Animal Farm
5 Water = 1 Meat, OR 1 Water + 1 Wheat = 1 Meat
Carpentry
3 Wood + 1 Metal = 1 Furniture
Sold at the Market for Denarii or the Furniture Store for Town Coins.
Which Resources Should You Prioritize?
You’ll always want to have a large stockpile of Basic Resources whenever possible, especially Water, Wheat, Wood, Ore, and Gold.Of those five,Wheat is usually the most important, as it’s necessary to recruit most troops; if you run out, you’ll quickly find yourself unable to reinforce your armies.
Beyond that, your needs will change from game to game, and may even shift during a particular run. Keep the following things in mind:
King Abilities
Each playable King has powers that unlock as you defeat bosses with them. Most have resource costs to activate, so it’s usually a good idea to plan your economy around your King’s particular needs.
