Clair Obscur: Expedition 33is a game that includesa lot of great characters. Among the most popular is definitely Esquie. He is simply so wholesome and lovable that it’s hard not to find him endearing.

He never gets involved in combat, but he helps transport you around the continent, meaning he’s there for almost all of the adventure. Along the way, you can have many conversations with the big guy, typically while you’re chilling at camp. In the process, he delivers some incredible lines. Here are some of his most notable quotes.

8"Franfran Used To Be All ‘Wheeee!’ But Now He’s All ‘Whooo!'"

The words ‘Wheee’ and ‘Whooo’ are an important part of Esquie’s lexicon. ‘Wheee’ basically means happy and positive, while ‘Whooo’ means sad and negative. In one conversation, Esquie explains that Francois used to be ‘Wheee’ prior to the events of the game when Clea used to be around, as the two were great friends.

Without her, though, he has become ‘Whooo.’ It’s a surprisingly deep scene, considering the words ‘Wheee’ and ‘Whooo’ are used so heavily in it.

7"Oh No, Too Much Effort"

Some of the main characters of Expedition 33 are very strong and can doan outrageous amount of damage in a single hit. Yet, none of them seem to be as strong as Esquie. He’s unbelievably powerful and would make the adventure go much quicker if he joined in on the fighting.

However, when Expedition 33 questioned whether he could get the rock they were painstakingly trying to track down for him, he hilariously claimed that it was too much effort. So, he’s a fairly lazy guy, but he’s also very relatable.

6"We’ve Got Lulu, Maemae, And Scisci. You Sure You Don’t Wanna Be Verver?"

During the game, Esquie creates a great bond with the other main characters, which leads to plenty of wholesomeness. One of the most wholesome aspects of the bond is that Esquie comes up with nicknames for each of his new friends.

They aren’t the most original names ever, as they’re just the first bits of their names repeated twice. So, Lune is Lulu, Maelle is Maemae, and Sciel is Scisci. Esquire explains all this to Verso and humorously asks if he wants to be known as Verver.

5"Men Trip Not On Mountains; They Stumble Upon Stones."

Esquie is often wiser than he looks. This is shown in one of his most powerful quotes when he says, “Men trip not on mountains; they stumble upon stones.”

What this quote is saying is that it isn’t usually the biggest challenges in life that cause the most problems. Instead, it’s the small and seemingly less significant problems that often derail you. A very similar quote to this already exists, which reads, “Men stumble over pebbles, never over mountains.” Both versions are meaningful.

4"I Think We Captured Your Essence Beautifully."

Esquie’s relationship with his neighbor, Francois, is a bit up and down. However, in an effort to get back a rock that Francois has, Esquie makes a small rock sculpture for his buddy. This one is of Francois with Clea standing on top of him.

When he sees it, Francois questions whether that is supposed to be him. After all, it isn’t exactly the perfect resemblance. Yet, Esquie responds by claiming that they beautifully captured his essence. In this case, ‘capturing his essence’ means drawing an angry-looking face on the sculpture with a marker.

3"I Thought I Was More Of A Wine-Keeper Than A Secret-Keeper."

One ofthe best interactions at campoccurs when they all discover that Verso has been storing wine inside Esquie, so they all drink together. Sciel initially finds out about the hidden wine from Esquie. Verso isn’t completely happy about the situation, as all his wine is now gone.

So, he can question Esquie about why he let the secret slip and question his abilities as a secret-keeper. Esquie’s defense - if you can call it that - is that he thought he was more of a wine-keeper than a secret-keeper. It’s a flimsy defense, but at least it’s a funny one.

2"Losing A Rock Is Better Than Never Having A Rock!"

It’s very evident early on that Esquie really loves rock. He has a deep collection of them, but he isn’t great at keeping track of them all. They go missing constantly. Yet, when he misplaces a rock, he clearly doesn’t fret.

After all, in one scene, he says that “losing a rock is better than never having a rock.” This is, of course, a play on the classic quote: “‘tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” The rock one is just Esquie’s version of the quote and is just as profound.

1"I Too Am ‘Whooo.’ But I’m Also ‘Wheee!’ So The ‘Wheee’ Balances The ‘Whooo.'"

After claiming that Francois is more ‘Whooo’ (negative) than ‘Wheee’ (positive) these days, Verso asks whether Esquie is also ‘Whooo." He claims that he is, but he’s also ‘Wheee,’ which balances it out. It’s an outrageous sentence to read out loud, as it sounds like a word jumble. But it does actually make sense.

Esquie’s immense positivity means he can never be completely angry or negative all the time, no matter how bad things get. This quote is him getting across that message in the most Esquie way possible.
