8Death Note

We all know about Death Note at this point. The manga was first published in 2003, so it’s been well over 20 years since we were first introduced to Light Yagami. If you somehow missed it, then now is the perfect time to start reading! Death Note is a bit timeless, but the story is complete, so you can read all 108 chapters now.

The concept of Death Note revolved around the ‘death note’, which was found by Light. After writing a name in it (and knowing their face), the person will die. From here, a captivating mystery ensues.

The cover for the first volume of Dandadan.

7Dandadan

The Dandadan animeaired in late 2024, bringing this supernatural comedy into the spotlight. This manga follows Momo (who believes in ghosts, but not aliens) and Okarun (who believes in aliens, but not ghosts).

Of course, both aliens and ghosts prove to be real, and the pair get into all sorts of supernatural situations. Dandadan is a great read if you are looking for something that takes a step back from horror and leads into the comedic (and bizarre) aspect of the supernatural world.

The manga cover for Tokyo Ghoul.

6Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul is another classic, with it’s first chapter being publishing in 2011. Since then, a lot of Tokyo Ghoul anime has aired, but the finale of the anime left many people disappointed. To get the full story though, you may read nearly 180 chapters of Tokyo Ghoul.

While the ‘monsters’ of this manga are called ghouls, they are very similar to vampires. Don’t let this fool you though; Tokyo Ghoul is far from a generic vampire story. This manga is packed with a fantastic story and a wide range of compelling characters.

The cover for the second volume of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun.

4Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun

The name of this manga is enough to capture your attention. The Hanako-kun in question is a spirit that is bound to a toilet in the bathroom of a high school. Hanako doesn’t just peacefully possess a toilet; shortly into the manga, he is summoned by Nene Yashiro and eventually the two are bound together.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is far from a typical ghost story. Te story is surprisingly humorous, and we can’t wrap up this recommendation without talking about how beautiful the artwork is.
