Summary

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33features a large open world with mysterious locations and dangerous enemies to defeat. There is never a dull moment for the main cast of characters, but they are able to wind down every night at camp to rest and reflect on their journey so far.

You can do some important stuff at camp, like upgrade your weapons and items, but you can also spend some one-on-one time with your allies to increase your bond with them. These interactions help you learn more about each character in the game and will eventually help youlearn new Gradiant skills, but some are much better than others.

Relationship scenes won’t begin until Act 2. Before reading any further, it is advised to be at least this far in the game.

10Cats Or Dogs?

Lune Relationship Rank 3

Lune is one of the most distant characters in your party, and it takes some time for her to finally let her guard down around Verso. When he awkwardly approaches her one night to ask if she prefers cats or dogs, it’s finally enough to break her barrier and allows them to forge a genuine connection.

This conversation eventually leads to Lune opening up about her family, especially her sister. While Lune stayed behind to help her parents with their research, her siblings lived their own lives, which she is happy about. Despite the serious tone, Lune pivots back into friendly banter by asking Verso if he likes monkeys or not, and this moment feels like the true beginning of their friendship.

9Dark And Personal

Sciel Relationship Rank 2

Sciel seems to get along with Verso much quicker than Lune or Maelle, and it doesn’t take long for the duo to start sharing personal stories with each other. Specifically, Sciel is looking for something dark and personal from Verso, but he counter-offers by only letting her choose one of those two options.

No matter which option you choose, Sciel will be a bit disappointed by your lackluster story. She then opens up about being a teacher and explains the complications of having children in a cruel world where younger people are disappearing every year. It’s a simultaneously funny and heartbreaking conversation that paves thepath for the rest of their relationship.

8Swapping Journals

Maelle Relationship Rank 2

This scene begins with Verso approaching Maelle as she continues to try and throw stones at The Paintress. The two of them eventually compare the stones to the many expeditioners that leave Lumiere to conquer The Paintress but never return.

Verso helps lighten the mood by talking about his journal and how he likes to use it to help him write insults about Monoco. With some levity in the air, the two joke about exchanging journals so they can read each other’s secrets. It’s a playful chat that helps establish a sibling-like relationship between the two characters.

7Living Up To Expectations

Lune Relationship Rank 5

One of the last conversations between Verso and Lune is where she finally lets him know about her upbringing and how that’s made her who she is today. Lune reveals that her parents decided to have her because they needed a reliable assistant who could stay home all day to help them with their research.

This life is almost all Lune has ever known, and Verso reciprocates by explaining that both his parents were artists and had expectations for him to follow in their footsteps. At the end of this conversation, Verso and Lune learn that they share a similar passion for music and promise to play together one day.

6Polishing Legs

Monoco Relationship Rank 2

Monoco is a unique character that collects the legs of his enemies so he can transform into them and use their abilities. Verso joins him one night as he polishes them, and the two engage in a funny conversation about Monoco’s battle tactics.

The Gestral likes to intimidate enemies by charging at them while wielding one of the legs of their brethren. This is pretty good logic, as almost anything would be terrified by a giant, hairy creature charging toward you while holding one of your friends' legs. Monoco’sseriousness about this issue is hilarious, and it’s moving when Verso offers to help his friend polish his collection of legs.

5Repainting The Monolith

Maelle Relationship Rank 7

The final relationship scene between Maelle and Verso takes place between their confrontation with The Paintress and thetrip back to Lumiere. With the truth finally on the table, the two can finally talk to each other about their family history and connection to each other.

In one of the most heartbreaking moments in the game, Maelle finally confronts Verso about whether or not he could’ve saved Gustave, and it’s up to you to decide to tell her the truth or lie. Either way, the scene ends with the two of them going back to the Monolith to paint “Papa, YOU go home” on it, which you can see on the horizon for the rest of your adventure.

4Matching Haircuts

Monoco Relationship Rank 3

Monoco and Verso were already close friends before you started visiting him at camp, and their camaraderie with each other is consistently hilarious and wholesome. The best example of this arrives early on in the game when the two decide to give each other matching haircuts.

It begins normally as Verso approaches Monoco with the idea of trimming his long hair, but Monoco is instantly offended by the idea and insists that Verso is the one who needs a cut. After a short argument, the two agree to just do each other’s hair and are bound by their mutual sense of style.

3Wheee Or Whooo?

Esquie Relationship Rank 4

Esquie is more of a mode of transportation than a party member, but you can still engage with him at camp to increase his bond with Verso. Similar to Monoco, Esquie and Verso already had a long history with each other before Expedition 33 arrived, but they seem to grow even closer on this voyage.

One night, Esquie is watching the stars when Verso approaches him for a conversation. After some chatter, Esquie reveals that he perceives good things in life as “Wheee” and bad things as “Whooo”. This leads to a hilarious conversation between the two, and after they’ve talked about their “WhooWheeWhooWhee” situation, Esquie pats Verso on the head as they continue to watch the stars.

2Swimming Lessons

Sciel Relationship Rank 6

Even outside the camp, one of Sciel’s defining traits is her inability to swim. It comes up multiple times throughout the story and in side conversations, and eventually, Verso decides to take her somewhere private to give her some advice and lessons.

At this point, Verso and Sciel have become incredibly close, and this scene illustrates how much they support each other. This scene can play out differently depending on whether you choose to romance Sciel and when you decide to engage with it, so make sure you start the swimming lessons when you’re ready.

1Esquie’s Headband

Esquie Relationship Rank 3

Shortly after Verso joins the team, Maelle gives him her armband to welcome him as an official member of the “Disaster Expedition”. Esquie is almost immediately jealous and demands that Verso make him a headband so he can feel like a part of the group.

Of course, Verso barely hesitates to help his old friend and somehow finds enough material to make Esquie’s headband. It’s a standout scene between both characters, and from this moment forward, you may always find Esquie wearing his headband around camp.
