Have you ever wondered whatOblivionwould look like withBattlefield-style destruction? Hurling a fireball at a rickety wooden house inBraviland not only watching it erupt in flames, but explode like a powder keg — wooden panels and beams flying off in all directions?
That’s exactly whatu/Time-Has-Comehas devised with their aptly titled mod,“Mad Destruction”, which makes every building in Oblivion Remastered incredibly susceptible to fireballs. Looking at the footage, I dread to think how easily a junior wizard in Cyrodiil could wreak havoc if they got bored (or really, really drunk on some Foaming Flask mead). Fling a bit of novice magic, and down comes the local church.
How It Works
It’s awe-inspiring to watch entire homes be torn apart at the flick of a wrist, but you’re probably confused about how this can even be done in a game like Oblivion. Well, as u/Time-Has-Come explained, it’s “only possible because of Unreal”, meaning that you couldn’t replicate this effect in the original Oblivion. Thank the Nine for the remaster, eh?
Essentially, they’ve taken the assets that were placed manually in the Creation Engine and given them zero gravity and some added propulsion, which means that any force sends the objectsflying.“Unreal is honestly crazy in terms of the types of mods it enables,” u/Times-Has-Come said.
They plan to give buildings more health, making it harder and more realistic to destroy objects.
Granted, as you’re able to see in the footage, it causes some truly horrible lag, which is hardly surprising given the sheer destruction on display. But whatissurprising is that “the framerate hitch you see in the video is actually not due to the physics being enabled”, but how inefficient the game is at finding the objects. Luckily, u/Time-Has-Come said that “shouldn’t be too hard” to fix.
Right now, everything and anything can be completely obliterated, but the goal of the mod is to make this less of a gimmick and more of a useful, immersive tool. The idea is that you will only be able to destroy structures at certain locations, likeOblivion Gatesand forts, making battles more dynamic. But in the meantime, don’t worry about tearing down the White Gold Tower or collapsing the Fighter’s Guild in on itself, because reloading an area restores anything you’ve torn down.
