Overall, Little Witch Academia is a beautifully animated show that stays fairly lighthearted. While there is conflict, you can still expect to get cozy on the couch and watch Akko and her friends live their lives at the academy.
7Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina is another anime that follows a young witch. Rather than going to school though, Elaina is a great watch; in fact, she is the youngest to pass the sorcery exam.
This anime follows Elaina as she travels around the world, learning all there is to know. She isn’t some all-powerful magical being that saves the world; she is a powerful young girl who sometimes, just wants to keep to herself.
6Kiki’s Delivery Service
We can’t talk about witchy anime without covering Kiki’s Delivery Service. This is a classic Studio Ghibli movie thatfollows the titular Kikias she (and her cat Jiji) goes out on her own and eventually finds herself living above a bakery and delivering goods.
There is no world-shattering crisis or ‘big bad’ in Kiki’s Delivery Service. Instead, this charming movie takes us alongside Kiki as she becomes more mature and confident in her own abilities. If you still haven’t seen this Studio Ghibli movie, we highly recommend checking it out.
5Burn The Witch
Burn The Witch is an anime movie (split into three episodes on Crunchyroll) which happens to take place in the Bleach universe, as it was created by the same mangaka. If you’ve never seen Bleach though, don’t worry! Burn The Witch can stand for itself.
This anime follows Noel and Ninny who work to protect London from dragons, as they supposedly cause well over half of the deaths in the city. With just three episodes, Burn the Witch doesn’t overstay its welcome, but if you are yearning for more, you’re able to check out the manga.
4Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (or just Madoka Magica) is technically about magical girls, but witches serve as the enemy. It’s hard to go into too much detail without spoiling the show, but just know that witches are a constant driving force in the show.
If you’ve never seen Madoka Magica, you may think this is some lighthearted magical girl show, but you would be wrong. This anime has its light moments, but it’s filled with an emotional story, complex characters, and surreal environments.
3Witch Hunter Robin
Witch Hunter Robin is a bit of an underrated entry, first airing in 2002. This anime follows Robin, who is a witch hunter. In this world, witches are deemed dangerous. Though this doesn’t mean that witches are evil, the fact that their powers can be used wrongfully is enough for a witch-hunting organization to exist.
Witch Hunter Robin was directed by Shuko Murase, who also directed Ergo Proxy.
Interestingly, Robin herself is a witch, which often creates strained situations. Witch Hunter Robin starts off a bit episodic, but as you watch more, a story will form as you learn about the place of witches in the world.
2Mary And The Witch’s Flower
Mary And The Witch’s Flowermay look like a Studio Ghibli movie, and that’s for a good reason. This movie was made by Studio Ponoc, which was founded by Yoshiaki Nishimura. This was the former lead film producer for Studio Ghibli. In Mary And The Witch’s Flower, we journey alongside Mary, who finds a flower that lets her become a witch for a short period of time.
This beautifully animated movie is similar to Kiki’s Delivery Service. This can be detrimental if you want something new or fresh, but if you are a fan of Kiki and need more cute witches doing witchy things, then Mary And The Witch’s Flower is worth the watch.
1Izetta: The Last Witch
Do witches have a place in global wars? They sure do in Izetta: The Last Witch. Well, at least one witch does. As the name implies, this anime follows the last witch, who is used as a weapon for the country of Eylstadt. While the setting isreminiscent of World War II, the show is in a fictional version of our world.
This anime is definitely more of a guilty pleasure. The politics are a bit shaky, especially as they are modeled after real-world politics during the war. Still, Izetta: The Last Witch is charming with great animation; just know that it starts off really strong but many consider the ending to be weak.
