Summary

TheNintendo Switch 2isn’t even a week old, and it looks like we have our first case of stick drift involving the console’s Joy-Con controllers. For those lucky enough to havesnagged a Switch 2 at launch or via pre-order, they’re probablydeep in Mario Kart World. However, this gamer is experiencing a nightmare — a faulty console out of the box.

As first shared on Reddit, user NearlyCrossing posted a video displaying a faulty left Joy-Con that has some combination of stick drift and being dead.

Outside some rogue stapled consoles courtesy of GameStop, it appears this is the first public, or at least the most popular instance, of a faulty console straight out of the box. It also puts into focus what has been a rather contentious topic that not only dominated the Switch’s lifecycle, but has the potential to also dominate the Switch 2.

The Switch 2 Joy-Con Is Basically The Same As A Switch 1 Joy-Con

Originally, in the lead-up to the Switch 2’s launch,Nintendo revealed that the new set of Joy-Cons would not feature Hall Effect joysticks, despitehaving dealt with major drift issues with the original console, something that Hall Effects would fix.

Then, when the console launched, one brave console owner tore down their Joy-Cons in order to figure out how likely they would be to drift, only to find out that the Joy-Con 2s are basically the same as the originals.

After that,it was discovered that Nintendo had already begun offering Joy-Con 2 replacements for free via the company’s repair website. Of course, the service is free, but it certainly had gamers wondering if there were already issues not even 24 hours into the console’s release.

Flash forward to today, and it looks like we have our answer. Hopefully, the fix process is as seamless and pain-free as the website suggests.
