Unity responds
A representative of Unity got in touch with TheGamer, saying that the framerate drop in three-player is a limitation of Survival Kids, not the Switch 2 or GameShare. Our original report follows.
Summary
TheNintendo Switch 2reveal was a mixed bag, as it confirmed somevery divisive features for the console- andan even more divisive price tag. However, one thing that I’m sure pretty much all of us can get behind is GameShare.
For those of you old enough to remember, it’s a lot like DS Download Play. Basically, as long as one person owns a copy of a game, they can invite other Switch users to join them for multiplayer, temporarily sharing the game with them. A bunch of games have been confirmed to have this feature, and one of them, is Survival Kids, a co-op survival game developed by Unity.
Now, more details are coming out about Survival Kids, and it might give us a hint about the limitations of the Switch 2’s GameShare feature. In a write-up fromGame File, it’s noted that the game runs at 60fps as long as you’re only partnered up with one other player, but goes down to 30fps if someone else joins in.
Switch 2 Framerate Could Be Limited By GameShare Multiplayer
We don’t know if this will be universal across all games with GameShare functionality, but this confirms that at least one title will limit your framerate if you have a larger party getting in on the fun. This might seem like nothing new, as we often expect to take a framerate hit if we’re playing local co-op, but it’s a little surprising given that everyone playing will still need their own Switch consoles.
In a statement to TheGamer, Unity has since clarified that this is a limitation of Survival Kids, not the Switch 2.
At the very least, Survival Kids will let those with original Switch consoles get in on the fun. You’ll just have to make sure the host has a Switch 2, which will be the case with some other games.
We’ll have to wait and see how the other titles fare with this GameShare mechanic. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches tomorrow, June 4, alongside some release titles likeMario Kart World,Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimiate Edition, and Survival Kids. There won’t be any pre-launch Switch 2 reviews as we get with other consoles, so we’ll all be seeing what it’s capable of at the same time.
