A Redditor claiming to have taken part in a recentSubnautica 2playtest has shared their impressions and noted that it seems polished enough to launch this year.
Although there are plenty ofamazing indie games to look forward to in 2025 already, Subnautica 2 is perhaps the most anticipated. The original was asmash hit when it launched in early access more than a decade ago, and the sequel is already generating a ton of excitement from fans.
That being said, there’s not all that much we know about Subnautica 2 so far.Aside from comments from the developers over on the game’s Discord, a lot about the game has been kept quiet so far. That might be changing soon, though, if reports of a recent playtest are to be believed.
Subnautica 2 Playtest Impressions Seem To Share New Details About The Game
And It Sounds Like A Nightmare If You’re Scared Of The Sea
Over on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, Redditor SN2Throwaway shared their impressions from a reportedly recent playtest for the game. The Redditor shared a lot of details about how the game runs (as well as suggesting in the comments that it’spolished enough to be on track for launching this year), but it’s the smaller gameplay details that we’re more interested in.
SN2Throwaway notes that the sequel “starts off really well and 100 percent feels like Subnautica”, although this time you start really deep into the ocean for a short while. That’s apparently quite “fear-inducing”, which sounds about right for anyone like me who’s terrified of what’s lurking underneath the sea.
The Redditor also suggests that Subnautica 2 takes place on a new planet and has throwbacks to the first game through PDAs and interactables. The resource gathering is mostly done through ore deposits, as the current build reportedly has concentrated chunks of resources on the ocean floor.
If the post is to be believed, Subnautica 2 lets you modify your genes, which is part of the reason why you apparently start off so deep into the ocean at the start.
One of the most interesting details shared by SN2Throwawayis in regards to the Collector Leviathan, who was apparently located outside of the playtest barrier. That didn’t stop the Redditor from breaking through, seeing it, and then needing “a new pair of underwear” as a result.
As of the time of writing, it seems that most are taking the playtest reports to be true, but it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s just a leak for now and not confirmed. If the information is accurate, then it sounds like Subnautica 2 is making some big leaps over the first game’s mechanics.
