There’s no question about the use of AI in game development becoming more prevalent. In fact, real devs are even losing their jobs because some studios prefer working with AI than real people. Due to the player backlash.Steamhas mandated thatall use of generative AI must be disclosedon the game’s page. To no one’s surprise, the number of games that have done so this year has dramatically skyrocketed.

According to a report byTotally Human Media, around 1,000 games disclosed the use of generative AI last year, while the number has shot up by almost 800 percent to 7,818 games in 2025. As things stand, seven percent of the entire Steam Library uses generative AI in one form or another.

Games Using Generative AI Have Significantly Increased

The report also revealed what these developers are using generative AI to create. 60 percent of the disclosures used AI for visual asset generation. Characters, backgrounds, textures, basically anything you can see in the game. Audio generation was the next big slice, with devs using generative AI for voiceovers and music.

Lower on the rung, some games used AI for narrative purposes or just general text, like the ones found in item descriptions or other flavour text in the game. A small portion of this was also used for marketing purposes like descriptions and banners. And lastly, AI is also used for assisting with code generation.

However, there are also some unique uses by games like Comedy Night, which uses AI for content moderation. Games like Nyric and Bitmagic Mini use it to create player prompted worlds.

Perhaps the most popular game that uses generative AI during runtime is InZoi. It uses AI to live-generate text, images and sound effects, as well as making “game mechanics decisions in real time”. Considering InZoi has sold an estimated 500,000 copies, the use of AI is not really affecting purchasing decisions by much.

The report noted some of the highest-selling games that have disclosed the use of AI, with My Summer Car being the biggest with an estimated 2.5 million units sold.
