Summary
In case you missed it,Star Wars Battlefront 2(the 2017 version) is having a massive resurgence in popularity. What seemed like a one-off due to May 4 AKA Star Wars Dayhas turned into afull-blown revolution, including the breaking of a four-year-old record of peak players.
Things have gotten so popular thatone of its developers wants to “get the gang back together” to make a Battlefront 3. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s even a Star Wars actor with over 500 in-game hours lobbying to make a third title happen. That said, while we all hope for a potential Battlefront 3, there was once a time that the original Battlefront series was in line to get a third game, until things fell apart.
Battlefront 3 On The PS3 and Xbox 360 Would’ve Been A Dream Come True
In an interview with VideoGamer, designer Dan Nanni shared that Pandemic Studios, who were responsible for the first two games, did indeed begin work on a potential third title in the franchise.
This version of the game was different from the one that Free Radical Designs was working on,one that was revealed to have been two yards away from the finish line before being canceled. Unfortunately, unlike the Free Radical iteration, this one didn’t make it as far.
“It was, honestly, we started working on it and then negotiations just didn’t take off,” Nanni said.
Part of why negotiations didn’t take off is due to the potential transition toPlayStation 3andXbox 360pushing the game into a longer dev cycle.
“When you’re moving to a new console, it’s not as easy as saying, ‘Let me just make a game for it like we did for the old console,'” Nanni shared. “New consoles have new hardware and new hardware comes with new limitations, and you don’t know exactly what you’re working with until you’ve got it.”
In the end, things weren’t meant to be, but Nanni believes that, had their vision of Battlefront 3 come to fruition, it would’ve been quite the treat for Star Wars fans. If they were “given the time, we’d have made something really special,” he said. It hurts just thinking about all of that potential. Here’s hoping this version of Battlefront can get a threequel.
