Summary
It’s time for another episode of “Things You May Have Forgotten Are Happening, But Have Been Teased Before Summer Game Fest.” The subject of today’s episode is the upcoming remake ofSplinter Cell, which Ubisoft announced in 2021.
Ubisoft’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted what appears to bea picture of protagonist Sam Fisherfrom the remake, captioned by two eye and lips emojis along with “#SplinterCell”. This combination of emojis tends to mean something along the lines of “it is what it is.”
Third Echelon
We’ve scarcely heard anything about the remake since its announcement in 2021, but Ubisoft could be gearing up to release a trailer at next week’s Summer Game Fest.
Ubisoft Toronto is the studio charged with remaking Splinter Cell. Given that the studio’s debut title was Splinter Cell: Blacklist in 2013, this remake could be seen as a poetic return to both the origins of the series, and of the studio. Ubisoft Toronto also co-developed Far Cry 5, and wholly developed Watch Dogs: Legion and Far Cry 6.
The original director of the remake, David Grivel, departed the studio in 2023. The game director role was then taken over by Andrea “Andy” Schmoll, previously a systems designer at the studio.
It’s been a tumultuous year for Ubisoft. The high-profile underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws seemed to send the company’s stock price into free-fall, sparking public revolts among shareholders and investors.
The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which is the second most successful Assassin’s Creed ever, appears to have rallied the company somewhat. A subsidiary focused on Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six wasspun off earlier this year, with Chinese conglomerate Tencent taking a $1.25 billion stake in the venture.
Ubisoft has yet to announce a Ubisoft Forward-type event for this year’s Summer Game Fest. We can expect any announcements the company intends to make to happen at the various other conferences that take place over the weekend, such as the main Summer Game Fest event on Friday, or the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday.
