Many fans have noticed stark similarities between theHorizonseries and developer Polaris Quest’s debut title, Light of Motiram, since itsannouncement back in November 2024. It appearsSonyhas now realized and put publisherTencenton notice in a new lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed by Sony (caught byGameSpot) in California, and it sees Sony going after Light of Motiram for copyright and trademark infringement. Sony allegedly doesn’t want Light of Motiram to see the light of day, as it’s actively attempting to prevent the debut title’s launch. Sony alleges “Tencent’s copying of Horizon is so blatant that the public has described it as ‘crazy,’ ‘insane,’ and ‘shameless,'” in the suit.

Sony said in its complaint that it declined an offer from Tencent to collaborate on a new “Horizon” game last year. Tencent later announced Light of Motiram, which Sony has now called a “slavish clone” of their Horizon franchise, and the internet jury agrees. In a newReddit threadposted today titled “Sony sues Tencent for their Horizon ripoff Light of Motiram,” fans have sounded off on the lawsuit, and some have even wondered how it took so long.

A person called darksamus8 said, “This game is so shockingly similar that I was laughing my a** off the entire time. The vibe/aesthetic is identical, the combat is SUPER similar, it’s even the same type of overall game,” in the thread, and many other posters have agreed. One fan wrote a particularly damning comment, saying, “This game looks the devs were tasked with playing Horizon and then recreating it from scratch.”

Sony Is Suing For $150,000 For Each Instance Of Horizon Infringement

According to the report, Sony is suing Tencent for each instance of Horizon infringement present in Light of Motiram. Sony also alleges Tencent operated with the intent of confusing video game audiences into thinking Light of Motiram is a Horizon series title, especially where the Light of Motiram protagonist is concerned. Sony is convinced the main character looks like Horizon protagonist, Aloy, as they both feature similar traits.

At the time of writing, Tencent and developer Polaris Quest have yet to comment on the lawsuit, but it looks pretty clear that Sony is going for the jugular with this one. Fans think it’s a slam-dunk case, but we’ll have to see whether the an official judge and jury agree.
