Solasta 2 is the sequel toSolasta: Crown of the Magister, a well-regarded CRPG that captures the spirit ofDungeons & Dragonswithout any of that pesky licensing and copyrighted material. The original game utilised Dungeons & Dragons' fifth edition rules from 2014, as did the demo for Solasta 2.

However, developer Tactical Adventures has announced that the full game will be released using the modern, updated fifth edition rules (5e), released in 2024. The rule update brings several changes, like updates to various spells and reworked class mechanics. There are also additional subclasses, backgrounds and races.

Solasta 2 Will Change To 2024 Rules

Wizards of the Coast didn’t release the System Reference Document (SRD) for the updated version of 5e until April 22 of this year, meaning Tactical Adventures couldn’t switch Solasta 2 to the new ruleset until that point.

The System Reference Document contains parameters for publishing content using the core of Dungeons & Dragons' rules. Solasta: Crown of the Magister was using the 2014 version of the SRD, and will now be switching to the 2024 version.

Tactical Adventures will not offer the option to switch between the two rule sets, as “it would almost be equivalent to releasing two games at once.”

“Making sure our game works in two different rulesets (even though they share similarities) would take us an incredible amount of time, not to mention the massive amounts of mental damage it would inflict upon our small (and beloved) QA team,” the announcement reads. “Design-wise, every monster, every class and subclass would need two different versions, and many spells no longer work the same. So… yeah, this is just not a possibility for us. But worry not, the 2024 ruleset is going to be fire. With us at the wheel, fun is and always will be mandatory.”

Combat is a massive component of Solasta 2, so this change is a significant one for the future of the game. The team essentially has to rework every fight to ensure it factors in the updated rules.

Solasta 2 will be released in early access at some point in 2025.
