The biggest video gaming nostalgia trip of 2025 has to beThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remaster, which has brought next-gen graphics to the Cyrodiil region for the first time. Oblivion’s story has always been iconic, and the main quest line produces some of the most fun quests in RPG history.
That definitely applies to the ‘Dagon Shrine’ quest, where you’ll need to either infiltrate or wipe out the Mythic Dawn cult members in an underground temple to try and reclaim the all-important Amulet of Kings. Here’s how to find, start, and complete the Dagon Shrine main story quest in Oblivion Remastered.
How To Start Dagon Shrine And Which Approach To Take
After completing the previous main story quest ‘Weynon Priory’, you’ll immediately start ‘Dagon Shrine’. The previous quest ends with you discovering the location ofthe Dagon Shrine, which is inside the Lake Arrius Cavernsin the East of the map. The nearest major settlement isCheydinhal,so it’s best tofast travel therebefore heading north to the caves.
You’ll have two options when it comes to the approach you can take for ‘Dagon Shrine’, but both will require a lot of combat to complete. So, if you’ve not got a lot of potions and items before heading to the caves, it’s best tostock up in Cheydinhal. The journey from Cheydinhal to the Lake Arrius Caverns is fairly straightforward, and you shouldn’t encounter any significant enemies along the way.
Enter the caves via the double wooden doors, and you’ll begreeted by a Mythic Dawn Doorkeeperwhen you head deeper into the caverns and to the entrance to the Dagon Shrine.
The Aggressive Approach
After speaking to the Mythic Dawn Doorkeeper, you’ll be invited into the caves to join the cult. When you go through the entrance doors, you’ll then beapproached by Harrow, who demands that you hand over your items to carry out the ceremony. If you want to go with the loud approach, this is where yourefuse twice and engage in combatwith Harrow. Dispose of the Doorkeeper and head further into the caves.
You’ll encounter a few more Mythic Dawn members in the next room, but be sure to explore all the caves and loot any valuable items you find. you may take your time here, it won’t affect the ceremony happening in the temple further on.Mankar Camoranwill be preaching to his followers at the altar in the main temple room. As you approach them, the Mythic Dawn members notice you and start to attack.Mankar Camoran will then teleport awayto the Realm of Paradise,
No matter how quick you are, you cannot stop Mankar Camoran from teleporting away. So, don’t do a desperate dash to try and intercept him. Even if you manage to attack him, he won’t take any damage.
Defeat the Mythic Dawn members and walk onto the altar. You will discover a defenseless Algorian Priest calledJeelius tied up near the backof the altar, and you can choose to free him.
It’sa good idea to free him,as you will encounter him later on, and you will receive a permanent stat boost when you speak to him. Then, head to the front of the altar, and you’ll findthe Mysterium Xerxesbook. This will come in handy later in the game, and you’ll need to take it to advance the quest.
Unfortunately, you cannot leave via the way you came into the caves, as those doors are automatically locked when combat starts. Instead, you’ll need tohead to the Living Quarters, where there are a bunch more Mythic Dawn members to kill. Like with the entrance way, take your time here andloot as much as you can.
The way out of the caves is fairly straightforward, although you will need to kill a specific Mythic Dawn member to get a key to unlock the exit, and there is a gate that requires you to turn a handle to open.
Once you’re out of the caves, fast travel to the Cloud Ruler Temple, and you’ll be approached by Jauffre on entry. Explain when you’ve found, and Jauffre will insist you speak to Martin immediately. Martin is inside the main building directly in front of you;hand him the Mysterium Xerxes.Martin explains that the book isn’t safe for you to handle and that he’ll need to study it in the hopes of getting the Amulet of Kings back.
Dagon Shrine will be completed at this point, and you’ll instantly startthe next main story quest, ‘Spies’.
The Stealth Approach
The second option when it comes to attempting to reclaim the Amulet of Kings is to pose as a prospective Mythic Dawn member. The difference here is that you agree tohand your possessions to Harrow, and instead of gatecrashing the mass, you attend it andlisten to Mankar Camoran preaching. After he teleports to the Realm of Paradise, you’re asked to go up to the altar to complete your initiation into the Mythic Dawn.
As part of the ritual, you are required totake a ceremonial dagger and kill Jeelius. If you refuse or choose not to kill him, the Mythic Dawn members will attack you. If you agree and do kill Jeelius, then the next step will be totake the Mysterium Xarxes, where the cult members will attack you anyway. There is no way for you to take the book without triggering the Mythic Dawn to attack, combat will be initiated at this point, no matter how sneaky you are.
If you’re wanting to save Jeelius, it’s best to free him after killing the Mythic Dawn members in the temple, as he will run off and through the Mythic Dawn members upon being freed, likely ending with him being killed.
From this point, the stealth approach doesn’t differ from the sword-swinging option outlined above. However, something to keep in mind is that you won’t have your weapons, armour, potions, or any other items within your inventory. You will need to kill Harrow and loot his corpse to get them back, which can be very tricky with around half a dozen or so Mythic Dawn members attacking you at the same time.
Which Approach Is Better?
Thinking practically, the stealth approach isn’t the bestoption when it comes to your approach in ‘Dagon Shrine’. It is impossible to recover the Amulet of Kings, as this cannot be looted from Mankar Camoran, and you cannot kill him before he teleports. He will leave with the amulet no matter what you do. The main difference between the stealthy and loud approach is that withthe loud approach, you will have all of your gearthroughout and not need to kill Harrow to get it back.
Of course, if you feel that your character is better suited to attempting the stealth option, go for that, but you cannot complete ‘Dagon Shrine’ without killing the Mythic Dawn members in the cave, and you will need to kill at least some of the enemies with a dagger and without armour.
