Elden Ring Nightreignis a far cry from many other Soulslike games, even the very game it came from. Elden Ring and other games developed by FromSoftware have a very specific way in which the story is told, with heavy reliance on environmental storytelling and flavour text from items. It is an effective method, but not quite for a multiplayer game.
And because of that, Nightreign instead condenses the most curated storytelling into each Nightfarer’s Remembrances, allowing their own character to be fleshed out beyond just their basic description. Guardian is a member of the Pinionfolk, and holds much remorse over what happened to his original flock. His remembrances deal with this.
What Is The Journal?
While the Remembrances make up the bulk of the storytelling for each Nightfarer, the Journal is also a great insight into their thoughts and history, offering snippets of the past and how they feel about fellow Nightfarer’s at the Roundtable Hold. Each Nightfarer also has a unique way in which their Journal entries are written, giving them a bit more personality.
Each Nightfarer’s Journal begins with only a single entry, with more added as Memory Fragments are found and Remembrances are completed. In total, there are around seven or eight Journal entriesfor each character, though Guardian stands out in this regard, with atotal of ten entriesin his Journal.
New Journal entries cannot be unlocked for a character while they have a Remembrance still to be completed, so make sure to do this as soon as they become available.
How To Unlock Memory Fragments
Memory Fragments arethe means through which new Journal entries and Remembrances are unlocked. The game may make it seem as though these are actual items you must find, but Memory Fragments are more of an unlock you get for completing certain actions, with new Journal entries and Remembrances unlocked for the character that got the Memory Fragment. As such, they are never an item you will see in your inventory.
When you have gotten a new Memory Fragment, it will appear in the corner of the screen, typically when you return from an expedition. These Memory Fragments unlock in many different ways, with some unique methods available to certain characters. For example, Executor can unlock a Memory Fragment from deflecting attacks while on an expedition. However, these methods are a tad random, making it hard to rely on them.
To that end, you should instead find more surefire methods, and that involvesbeating Nightlords. In general, earlier Remembrances are easier to unlock than later ones. You may unlock your very first Remembrance by just making it to the boss on the first night, while the final one may require defeating a Nightlord.
Due to the degree of randomness involved, it is not guaranteed that you will get a Memory Fragment even from these more guaranteed methods, whilein some scenarios a single Memory Fragment can unlock multiple Journal entries and a new Remembrance. All you’re able to do is keep playing, and keep winning, and eventually you will get Memory Fragments for the character you are playing as.
Guardian’s Remembrances
While most other Nightfarers have three Remembrances to recall, Guardian has a bit more memories to unravel. In total,he has four Remembrances for you to play through. These are equally split across stories in the Roundtable Hold, and having to explore Limveld for items. You can begin them from the latest entry in his Journal.
Guardian’s Remembrances are a wonderful insight into him as a character, and how he feels about all of the other Nightfarers in the Roundtable Hold, but they also come with more tangible rewards as well. Each Remembrance completed comes with new Relic Rites, Relics, and even outfits, making them incredibly worth pursuing. So here are all of Guardian’s Remembrances, and how to complete them.
Remembrance #1
Guardian’s first Remembrance is a fairly short one, though immediatelytasks you with fighting a challenging enemy. Here are all of the steps, and some tips to help you along the way.
After speaking with the Iron Menial, he tasks you withfinding a Stone Stakeso that he can break the lock on the Cursed Volume in his possession, which may reveal the secrets of the curse that destroyed Guardian’s original flock. Head out to Limveld and find the Golem all by itself far away in a corner of the map.
You can do Remembrances through matchmaking, though you cannot match with anyone else with a Remembrance active. Because of that, it can beeasier to perform Remembrances solo.
The Golem is quite large, and moves quite a lot during the battle. It is possible it will move too far away from its spawn point, which will cause it to teleport back there. This can be time-consuming, so it is better to level up on the first day and then defeat the Golem on the second day when you are more powerful. It will drop the Stone Stake upon its defeat.
After completing this Remembrance, you will unlock theStone Stake as a Relic.
Remembrance #2
Guardian’s second Remembrance is much more involved, taking place solely within the Roundtable Hold. Here are all of its steps:
While you are presented a choice, you must kill him.
This concludes Guardian’s second Remembrance, andgives him a new Chalice for Relic Ritesas a reward.
Remembrance #3
Guardian’s third Remembrance returns him to Limveld, prompted by the ledger he found on the Spectral Merchant. This, he hopes, willlead him to the next Cursed Volumehe is looking for. Here are the steps, and other things to look out for:
If you’ve encountered the Libra raid before, it is somewhat akin to that. While Libra will not curse you and drain your HP,he will appear on the map, marked for you to make a deal with. Once you seek him out,he will ask for 10,000 Runes in exchange for the book. As such, you should not rush right to Libra. Instead, take the time to gain some Runes first so you don’t approach him empty-handed.
Once you complete the trade, you get the Cursed Volume, no strings attached. you may even talk to Libra again for another trade as if you had completed the trade. At this point, you can fail the expedition and you will retain the Cursed Volume. Just make sure you don’t quit or you will lose all your progress.
After returning to Iron Menial, you will get the Third Volume as a Relic.
Remembrance #4
At last, we have Guardian’s fourth and final Remembrance. Here,he will finally uncover the curse that killed his first flock, and the cost of supporting his new flock. This one takes place entirely within the Roundtable Hold once again, and features some tragic revelations. Here are all of the steps involved:
This Remembrance involves Revenant, so verify you’ve already gotten her as a playable character to get this Remembrance to unlock.
Regardless of the choice you make here,Guardian will ultimately choose to forgive Recluse, viewing the preservation of his new flock as more important than avenging the death of his last one. You will gain theWitch’s Brooch as a Relicafter conclusion, as well asGuardian’s Remembrance outfit.
After fully finishing all of Guardian’s Remembrances, you will also getan extended ending with himwhen fighting the final boss of the game.
