Rockstar mistakenly listed GTA 3 for free last week. The mistake was a brief one - it was rectified within an hour - and exclusive to the mobile version of the game. A lot of people got wind of the error and grabbed the game for free, though, and if you were one of those people, you will now need to keep the game on your device of choice forever or risk having to pay for it.
Usually when a game or an app is tied to the account through which you initially downloaded it, you can delete and reinstall that app whenever you like, or even download the app on another device it’s signed into the same account.According to Wario64, that is not the case for those who managed to bag themselves a free copy ofGTA 3on mobile last week.
The account issued a warning to those who got the game for free, urging them to not delete the game if they plan on actually playing it. When they attempted to install GTA 3 on another device while logged into the account through which they managed to download it for free, they were met with three options, all of which had cost of some sort attached.
Don’t delete GTA 3 if you downloaded it for free last week
Rockstar is trying to get that $5 out of you, one way or another
You can even playRed Dead Redemptionon there, despite the name.
None of those options are “download this game for free because you have it on another device”, though. Not only does that mean no free multi-platform GTA 3 for you, but it also means if you delete the app on your primary device, you will likely be met with the same prompt listing the three options detailed above.
On the one hand, this all feels a little unfair since it was someone else’s mistake and if you got the game for free off the back of that mistake, it should be yours to keep forever. On the other hand, if you did download GTA 3 for free, just be thankful it hasn’t been pulled from your device entirely. I’m honestly surprised that wasn’t the case. There have been plenty of examples of that in recent history, although to be fair, this isn’t quite as extreme asthe time Amazon sold Mario Red OLED Switch consoles for a penny each.
