As part of the first “Creator’s Message” forResident Evil Requiem,Capcomhas confirmed the long-standing rumours thatResident Evil 9started out as a multiplayer-focused game.

Even though Resident Evil Requiem (or just Resi 9 if you prefer)was only just revealed earlier this month as part of Summer Game Fest, it feels like we’ve known about it for quite some time. That’s because therehave been a boatload of rumours and leaks about the ninth mainline Resident Evil game, fromLeon Kennedy being the main protagonistto it taking place on anisland inspired by Singapore.

Perhaps the most interesting rumour of all, though,is that Resident Evil 9 started out as a multiplayer-focused titlebefore Capcom came to its sense and went back to the drawing board.Everything we’ve seen of Requiem so far has made that seem unlikely, but it’s actually just been confirmed to be true as part of a recent “Creator’s Message” that was made for Requiem.

Yes, Resident Evil 9 Really Did Start Out As A Multiplayer Game

We Still Don’t Know If Leon And Jill Were Going To Be In It, Though

Yesterday, Capcom held its usual Summer Showcase, which included a brief segment on Resident Evil Requiem (and some lies about Leon’s involvement). In an extendedvideo shared on the game’s website and locked behind the Resident Evil Portal, the developers of the game dived into Requiem’s development and what Resident Evil 9 initially looked like.

Surprisingly, Capcom took the chance to confirm the rumours andreveal that Resident Evil 9 started out as an online multiplayer game, which we even got to see some early development footage of. The footage seems to show two characters (which could be Leon and Jill) making their way around a foggy-looking area and shooting zombies.

This might be copium talking, but the male and female characters really do look like they might be Jill and Leon like the rumour claimed. It’s pretty blurry footage, so it’s hard to tell.

We don’t see much more of the cancelled open-world online version of Resident Evil 9, but the developers confirmed that it spent some time on the idea and had some “interesting concepts” before scrapping it. The reason for that is simple - Capcom knew that it wasn’t what fans really wanted to see from the series.
