As I’m sure you’re all aware, last week was absolutely packed with gaming newsthanks to the State of Play, Summer Game Fest, and the Xbox Games Showcase. By far thebiggest reveal of all three events was for the ninth mainline Resident Evil game, Resident Evil Requiem, which looks like a big departure for the series.
One of the main reasons Requiem looks so unique compared to recent Resi games is that it stars a new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft,who is the daughter of Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft. This came as a surprise to many players considering how manyrumours were floating around about Leon Kennedy’s return to the series.

Leon Stans Know The Truth, Though
Since Requiem was revealed,the insiders who reported that the game would feature Leon Kennedy have doubled downand insisted that Capcom is just hiding him from the game’s marketing for now. That certainly seems believable coming from the rug-pulling Capcom, who is also doubling down on the idea that it’s all going to be about Grace.
As pointed out by Twitter user NeonSlice, a message from Requiem’s director Koshi Nakanishi was recently shared,which has him going over the game’s trailer and sharing some details. At one point in the message, Nakanishi refers to Grace Ashcroft and says that she’s the “new main character” of the game.
If Capcom’s not just trying to hide the truth, it’s possible that Leon will still return and just have less of a prominent role than we all thought. That, or he’s not even in the game at all.
This is seemingly supposed to confirm that Grace is the protagonist of Requiem and the only character we’ll be playing, potentially in response to all of the rumours about Leon returning. The choice in wording is interesting, though, as even if Leon does return, it’d technically still be true that she’s thenewmain character of Requiem.
Of course, most Resident Evil fans are choosing to believe it’s just going to be a bait and switch still, but it is interesting that Capcom is doubling down on the idea when everyone else has made up their mind already.
