The director of the upcomingResident Evilmovie, Zach Cregger, has admitted that he’s not trying to be too “obedient” with the game’s lore, since he knows fans will “come after” him online no matter what.
Althoughalmost every Resident Evil fan has their attention focused solelyon the upcoming ninth mainline game,Resident Evil Requiem, that’s not the only big thing for the series that’s in the works right now. There’s also a new movie coming out, but this one is a lot more exciting than theprevious underwhelming adaptations.
Simply titled “Resident Evil” right now,the upcoming movie is directed by Barbarian lead Zach Cregger, who has gone on record to note that he’s a big fan of the games. Still, even though Cregger loves Resident Evil, he’s admitted that he’s not going to try too hard to follow the games as closely as you might expect in his reboot.
Upcoming Resident Evil movie won’t be too tied to the games
Director Zach Cregger knows not to try and please fans too much
As pointed out by GamesRadar+, Cregger recently chatted to SFX magazine about the upcoming Resident Evil movie, where he gave some interesting details about the mysterious project. Cregger started by noting that he’s a “gigantic” fan of the games and has played them all, but that he’s not just trying to adapt them.
The Barbarian director notes that he’s not “trying to be completely obedient” with the lore of the games, as he wants to do something different with the series. While he doesn’t think he’s breaking any rules, he knows that “no matter what I do”, fans are going to come for him online, making it a bit of a moot point to care about canon.
I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. - Zach Cregger
Although that might seem a little worrying if you’re a big Resi-head, Cregger says that he’s still trying to make a movie that gives fans the “experience” they get when playing the games.Considering how confusing Resident Evil’s lore has gotten, that certainly seems to be the best step for the movies going forward.
