Rematchis the hottest new football game on the market, with innovative gameplay that echoes Rocket League - but with actual footballers. This isn’t an easy game to learn, and it’s definitely not an easy game to learn on your own. The controls in particular can be a bit tricky, especially learning the difference between aiming passes with the stick and shooting with the camera.
We’d recommend starting out practicing just on your own in the arena, getting used to the dribbling and shooting, and then heading into a 3v3 quick match to start testing your skills. Whatever you do, just remember to pass the ball.
For the purpose of this guide, we will be using controllers as the default controls. Rematchshould be played on a controller, really.
How To Receive The Ball
One of the biggest hurdles is actually being able to receive passes. Obviously, you need to line up your character with the pass, but you canalso hit X (PS5) or A (Xbox) to receive the ball with a slight touch.
you’re able to angle this touch to quickly breakaway with the ball, as the ball will move in the direction of your stick. This is a great little technique toget around defendersorget a break towards goal.
How To Control The Ball With A Trap
you may quickly stop the ball in its tracksusing a combination of the defend button (Left Trigger) and X/A. This traps the ball and stops it at your feet, rather than having to chase it down. Hold down the defensive button and then tap X/A to stop the ball.
This is a little tricky to time, but once you get the timing right, it gives you the opportunity toimmediatelypass the ball to a partner, rather than the slow run of chasing the ball down.
How To Properly Pass The Ball
Now you’ve got the ball and are controlling it better, you’ll need to focus on mastering your passing. Rematch has a unique control mechanic which meansshots are aimed where the camera is pointingwhereaspasses are aimed where the stick is pointing.
you’re able to quicklytap passto release the ball quickly from your feet. There are a few things to cover here, so let’s quickly run through them.
Tap speed is dictated by the speed at which your player is moving. The faster you move (Sprinting), the faster the pass.
This all sounds a little confusing - don’t worry, you’ll get used to it in just a few matches.
How To Dribble
First comes control, then comes passing, and then comes dribbling. Dribbling is a powerful tool in Rematch, and it comes with ahigh skill ceiling.
Default dribbling can be done just by moving the stick left to right, which shifts the ball from side-to-side. You don’t even need to use theDribblingstance to start moving your opponents around.
However, to do some more interesting skill moves, you’ll need to hold down L2/LT to enter the Dribbling stance. This will allow you to start chaining some skill moves together.
How To Sprint With The Ball And Manage Stamina
Sprinting is pretty straightforward, but you may double tap your sprint button for a super-fast sprint. This only has a very short windowandif you are currently dribbling, you will lose the ball from your feet.
Only use it in very specific situations, often to blast past a defender for a forward pass.
You’ll also need to learn how to manage your stamina. This is shown in the bar at the bottom of your screen. Stamina regenerates while moving slowly - but you’ll burn it whenever sprinting or dribbling.
Stamina is important to conserve because you might need it for a crucial burst of speed, particularly when defending.
How To Use The Wall To Your Advantage
Much like in Rocket League, the wall surrounding the pitch is your best friend. It can be used to line up your partners for a shot on goal, or you may even use it toLobpass over your opponent’s heads.
For example, if you’re running down the wing and want to get past a defender without some tricky dribbling, you can justLob Short Tapinto the wall and then run onto the ball as it goes over their head.
Don’t use this too much as it will slowly become easy to read. Mix and match it up with some dribbling.
Sometimes it’s easier to take a shot to an area around the goal -typically right above the goalkeeper in the center- and then hope your teammate comes in with a follow-up shot. It can be very deceptive and fool the goalkeeper.
How To Defend
Defending is just as important as shooting, passing, and dribbling. Probably moreso. You can defend by getting into the defensive stance by holding down LT/L2. This will allow you tojockeyopponent players, while you can slide tackle withBorCircle.
Another mechanic we like to use is toblock the goalkeeperwhen they’re trying to pass. You can jump up withYorTriangleto intercept the ball. This can also be used to receive balls in the air, or pass with your head after jumping.
How To Curve Your Shots
Once you’ve got the ball and started mastering some passing, it’s time to think about shooting. It’srelativelystraightforward, but the biggest skill is being able to quickly curve your shots. You can deceive the goalkeeper with ease once you get it down.
All you need to do is hold yourshoot button(Right Trigger), and then use the stick to move the circle in the center of your cursor in the direction you want the ball to curve. Then release the shoot button.
How To Do A Fast Shot
While the full shot with curve mechanics (tying in some overhead kicks for flair) are a great way to score goals - often you’ll find yourself in front of the goalkeeper with very little time to get a shot off.
This is where the Fast Shot mechanic comes in. This is basically just using theTapmechanic we mentioned earlier to essentiallypassthe ball into the net. Just tap your button and the ball will move quicklyin the direction of your stick.
Again, this can be a bit tricky to learn because of the difference between aiming with the camera and aiming with the stick. Practice makes perfect.
How To Practice With Your Friends
The easiest way to tie all of these together is just to play with your friends in aCustom Match. You can set up a lobby to run for 20 minutes with infinite timer on goals and just practice moving, dribbling, and passing.
