Summary

If you’ve read my interview withClair Obscur: Expedition 33’snarrative lead, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen,you’ll know that the game started out as something entirely different. Prior to investors alleviating financial concerns, the titlebegan its life as a game set in a steampunk version of London, full of aliens and zombies. After a complete reboot, though, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as we know it was born.

Now, following the news that the game was entirely different, screenshots and a video have emerged online from when director Guillaume Broche was looking to hire talent for a project then called “We Lost.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Started As “We Lost”, But Actually, We Won

Five years ago, Brocheposted on Reddit, hiring for an “Ambitious AA Game project looking for three female and two male voices.” The post included a link to a trailer and a script, both of which are now inaccessible through the shared links. Despite this, though, fans of the game have managed to get their hands on said trailer, and images have begun to appear online.

Four images reportedly showing early development screenshots from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, or We Lost, were posted on Twitter bySekirodubi. Thetrailer can be found here.

The footage lines up with what we were told about the previous project, with much of it focusing on three characters: Frey, Lune, and Maelle. While Frey was ultimately changed to Gustave, Svedberg-Yen told TheGamer that Lune and Maelle had kept their names from the earlier project. The trailer also includes various scenes that look to be set in the steampunk version of London that Svedberg-Yen alluded to.

Alongside the leaked trailer, eagle-eyed fans havespotted concept art from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s art director, Nicholas Maxson-Francombe. This concept art is much closer to the final product that we’re used to seeing, with the ominous monolith standing in the background, alongside four giant Nevrons, and our four party members in the foreground.

It’s hard to argue that we got the best version of the product after seeing these.
