As expected, Pokemon has revealed its next TCG expansion. Dubbed Mega Evolution, the name of this one really gives away what’s inside extending 2025’s focus on Mega Evolved Pokemon from the upcoming Legends: Z-A to the TCG when the new expansion drops later this year.

I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a year better than 2025 for thePokemon Trading Card Game. Things kicked off with the incredibly popular, incredibly hard to get hold of Prismatic Evolutions, and things went from strength to strength.Journey Togetherwas next, ushering in the return of Trainers' Pokemon. This paved the way forDestined Rivals, which saw the villainousTeam Rocketreturn to the TCG, and now we’re on the cusp ofBlack Bolt and White Flare, the first English-language Pokemon TCG set to be split in two, featuring special cards of every single Pokemon.

It doesn’t stop there, though. Today, The Pokemon Company has just revealed its next expansion, Mega Evolution, which, as the name implies, will focus on Mega Evolutions and tie in perfectly with the upcomingPokemon Legends: Z-A. Launching on June 02, 2025, it will be the first time Mega Evolutions have been included in a TCG expansion since Sun & Moon.

The Pokemon TCG’s Next Expansion Is Mega Evolution

We’ve known Mega Evolutions have been returning to the Pokemon TCG for a while now. In February, it was revealed that, for the first time since 2016’s XY Evolutions, the mechanic would be returning to the TCG with Mega Gardevoir ex and Mega Lucario ex. Following that, Japanese versions ofMega Latias ex and Mega Venusaur ex were shown off, with the latter becoming thehighest-HP Pokemon card of all time.

Now, The Pokemon Company has officially confirmed that its next expansion will be all about Mega Evolutions, and that the set will be released on June 25, 2025. The set will include ten Mega Evolution Pokemon ex cards, 22 illustration rares, 22 ultra rare Mega Evolution and trainer cards, and ten special illustration rare Mega Evolution and Support cards.

Pre-orders for the new expansion haven’t gone live at the Pokemon Center at the time of typing this, but likely will do at any moment. Once that happens, as has been the case with every expansion so far this year, all hell will break loose. Hopefully, things will have changed and there will be enough stock to go around this time, but I’m not holding out much hope.
