Summary

Summer Game Fest 2025wasn’t as loaded as previous editions, but it did have a few stand outs. Among the many trailers we saw was that of Beast of Reincarnation. It started with a shot of a detailed, lush green forest and a giant stag that looked like it was made out of trees. The first few seconds already had us hooked, but things got really interesting once the developer’s name was revealed.

Game Freak, is mostly known for working on Pokemon games likeSword and Shield,Scarlet and Violet, andLegends: Arceus. While the reception of those games is a whole debate, we can all agree that they aren’t the most visually striking games in the industry. So, it’s no surprise that Pokemon fans were surprised and even a bit annoyed that Game Freak is making such a great looking game for other consoles.

Pokemon Fans Want A Game That Looks This Good

Wait so Game Freak does know what a modern game should look like?

It’s a common misconception that Nintendo owns Game Freak and that’s why no other studio works on Pokemon games. In fact, it co-owns The Pokemon Company. Many fans have been hoping that another studio could take the IP to the next level, at least in terms of visuals, but it’s always Game Freak with its underbaked visual detailing.

So, when Beast of Incarnation was revealed under the studio’s banner, fans could not help but wonder why Pokemon hasn’t been getting the same treatment (thanksGamesRadar). “This was by far the craziest reveal from the xbox showcase,” said one comment on a Reddit post. “I need more info. This throws my entire understanding of Game Freak as developers into disarray.”

“So this is what they were hiring people with Unreal Engine experience for,” pointed out another. “Damn, I was hoping it would be for Gen 10. I swear, if Pokemon doesn’t get off this ancient in-house engine next gen.”

This led to a lot of confusion about why Game Freak is always tied up with deadlines, and who is to be blamed for this, between the studio, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company.
