We’ve all heard the occasional rumor growing up, with some of them even relating to video games. Maybe you heard a specific rumor on the playground and truly believed it, even if it was nothing but a hoax. Of course, maybe you could sniff out a rumor as fake, even if it actually wasn’t.

Here, we are going to take a look at some popular video game rumors that you may have heard on the playground, as well as whether they hold any truth or not. If you haven’t heard of any of these rumors; don’t worry. Every playground around the world has a slew of rumors, so there are bound to be some that you are unaware of.

7Mew Truck

Pokemon Red And Blue

This is one of the more popular rumors out there, taking place in Pokemon Red and Blue. Rumor has it that a Mew was hiding under a truck, parking on a ledge that was a bit hidden. There was no way to confirm this, but the rumor took off.

As you probably suspected, this rumor wasn’t true. Nintendo never explained the truck, but in later Pokemon games, this rumor has been acknowledged. Rather than being a truck that serves no purpose, you’re able to find items hidden underneath it.

6Herobrine’s Existence

Minecraft

This is another absolute classic that is still referenced to this day. Who exactly is Herobrine? Visually, he looks like Steve with white eyes. He is also rumored to destroy things that you build in the world. The thing is, Herobrine never existed. This didn’t stop players from around the world fromhaving Herobrine “sightings”.

There is no white-eyed version of Steve, but an interesting phenomenon took place, with Herobrine essentially being spoken into existence. Sure, he wasn’t real to begin with, but he is in a plethora of Minecraft mods, and even ranked 46th place on a poll for the top video game villains (through Guinness World Records). Who knew all this would stem from a 4chan post?

5Bigfoot

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Bigfoot is a cryptid that many people claim to be real in our world, but these supposed sightings have even made their way into Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In Back o Beyond, there were rumors of a lurking Sasquatch that captured the attention of players very shortly after the game launched.

GTA: San Andreas could be modded, leading to many fake Bigfoot sightings.

A MissingNo. encounter in Pokemon Red and Blue.

There was never a Bigfoot though. Interestingly, it seems that some players believed the hunger noises from CJ’s stomach were actually Bigfoot’s rumble. This proved to be untrue, but Bigfoot made his way into Grand Theft Auto 5 as an Easter Egg.

4Minus World

Super Mario Bros.

Did you ever hear the rumor of a secret Super Mario Bros. level that you could glitch into? In World 1-2 of this 1985 game, you could enter this hidden world. Interestingly, it’s actually called World 36-1, but it was displayed as “-1 World” giving it the name Minus World.

This isn’t just a playground rumor though; Minus World is real!We found an article from 2010, translating information about the Minus World from Miyamoto himself. He mentions that the world is a bug, but since it’s not game-crashing, it’s a feature.

3MissingNo.

This is another rumor taking place in Pokemon Red and Blue. This is technically a glitch, but it displays as a jumble of pixels with the name MissingNo., prompting players to spread the rumor that MissingNo. is another Pokemon species.

The rumor that MissingNo. is a Pokemon is not true, but it is true that you’re able to glitch the game and see it. Nintendo has actually addressed this glitch, stating that if you try to catch it, you can corrupt your game. This, of course, led to even more interest in MissingNo.

2Tomb Raider’s Nude Code

Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is quite the sex symbol, so it makes sense that there was rumored code that you could use to make her naked. We even founda video game magazine published in 1997that explained how to do it.

In the article, you’re instructed to basically tap in time to Wannabe by the Spice Girls. The article even mentions a spokesperson from Core stating that anyone under 18 doesn’t have the “rythmn” (spelled wrong) to use the code. None of this is true, but you can find gamers across the internet still claiming that it is real.

If you have the original Tomb Raider (1996), give it a try!

1L Is Real 2401

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 launched in 1996, but you were only able to play as Mario. In the Castle Courtyard of the game, you can find a statue that seems to be etched with words that read “L is real 2401” or just the phrase “Eternal Star”. The latter option makes more sense, but “L is real 2401” became an instant rumor.

With L being for Luigi, players believed that if you collected every coin in the world (all 2,401 of them) and returned to the statue, Luigi would become a playable character. So, is L real? Miyamoto mentioned that Luigi was supposed to be in the game originally, but it was scrapped; this could back up the realness of L. Overall though, this seems to be fake.

24 years and one month (2401) after the launch of Super Mario 64, a leak revealed a character model for Luigi in the game. It’s up to you to decide if this proves that L is real or not!
