I think it’s fair to say thatThe Last of Us Season 2failed to capture a lot of the magic that made the first season such a monumental success. Over the duration of the series, criticisms were flung at the show, some of them very much justified, as fans of the game also thought thata lot of scenes were horribly adapted. Overall, not a great showing for Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin.
Despite the mostly negative reception among fans,The Last of Us has done alright at the Emmys this year, and has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. On top of that, several actors from the show have been nominated for awards, including Bella Ramsey as Best Lead Actress; Kaitlyn Dever and Catherine O’Hara as Best Guest Actress; and Joe Pantoliano and Jeffrey Wright as Best Guest Actor.
However, there is one nomination that has raised a few eyebrows, and that’s Pedro Pascal’s nomination for Best Lead Actor. Now, I’m not really one to judge Pascal on his acting chops, but it’s a strange nomination given that Joel barely features in the show outside a handful of episodes, thanks to his forced golfing trip. In fact, Pascal was in less than half of the episodes in Season 2, which calls into question his status as a ‘lead actor’ to begin with.
It’s bizarre, but the Emmys has a history of doing this, having nominated Brian Cox for best lead actor in the final season of Succession, despite only appearing in a total of three episodes. It doesn’t make it any less strange though, and feels a little unfair to other outstanding actors like Diego Luna, who featured throughout the entirety of Andor’s latest season.
In fact, Diego Luna’s snub this year has riled up his fans on social media, with many taking shots at Pedro Pascalfor potentially taking his place. For example,a Twitter user called Baileylikemoviequestions why Pascal was nominated despite being “in 3 episodes of a poor season”,while the Andor subreddit is unsurprisingly on fire, with one user calling the awards a “disgrace” for not nominating Luna.
