Earlier today, we lost one of the truly great pioneers of heavy metal,as it was announced that Ozzy Osbourne has passed away aged 76. At the time of writing, the cause of Ozzy’s death has not yet been confirmed, though the singer had been battling with Parkinson’s disease and a spinal injury that occurred in 2019. On Twitter, it was explained that Ozzy was “with his family and surrounded by love” when he passed.
It didn’t take long for tributes to start pouring out on social media, given the gigantic impact he had on music, and that extended into the gaming sphere too. Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t involved too much in video games during his career, but the few times that he indulged were memorable and iconic, whether it be rocking out to Mr. Crowley inGuitar Hero: World Tour, orhis classic TV ad for World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King expansion.
However, the game that he was most involved with - and arguably the one he’s most known for - was Double Fine’s cult classic title Brutal Legend. In the game, Ozzy played the Guardian of Metal, who players would visit to upgrade their vehicle, and his performance is often spoken about as one of the best parts of the game in general.
Ozzy Osborne’s Death Has Brutal Legend Fans Booting The Game Up Again In His Honor
With Ozzy’s passing, his performance in Brutal Legend is once again being shared on social media, and places like Twitter and Reddit are now filled with people talking about booting the game back up again in his honor. For example,a Reddit post from a user called Willemvanvugturges everyone to “go play Brutal Legend”, sharing the best ways to grab it for cheap and letting people know it’s on Game Pass.
Similarly, you have people on social media likeGamesNoshandIFinishedAGamecracking out their old copies to play Brutal Legend as a tribute to the Prince of Darkness, and I’m going to be right there alongside them later today. If you feel like paying your respects to Ozzy, there aren’t many better ways than to take in his best performance in a video game. Rest in peace, Guardian of Metal.
