I love diving into the nitty-gritty of an RPG’s design. In a game as large as Oblivion (andOblivion Remastered), there’s a reason behind the placement of every little item in the game, and there are many items. However, there’s always going to be cut content or redundant items that developers simply forgot to remove, and there are plenty of those in Oblivion.
My personal favourite is the mysterious blood potion, which isn’t actually a potion at all, but a miscellaneous item. This item, a daedric-style vial of red liquid, can only be found in a single, very strange location in the game.
There Could Be Anything In That Vial
The potion is found in the exterior of Random Oblivion World 6. Unlike other Random Oblivion Worlds, there is no guaranteed entrance for this particular layout, which means you’ll have to go looking for the right gate if you want the blood potion.
Rather than occupying any prominent location in this area, the blood potion is instead just lying on the ground near a rocky outcropping. It’s strange that the item has been left in the game, but even stranger that this was the chosen location for the vial. It doesn’t add thematically to anything lying on the ground in a random corner of the Deadlands.
As mentioned previously, the blood potion does nothing. It’s a miscellaneous item, which means its only purpose is decorative. However, if you’re like me and love gathering an eclectic collection of items to display in your player home, then the blood potion is a good find because of its unique texture and rarity.
Technically, since you can enter the same Random Oblivion World twice through two different gates, you can find two different blood potions if you’re committed enough.
Hatreds Soul and Hatreds Heart, two enchanted daedric weapons, can be found multiple times in a Random Oblivion World 2 through the same method.
There are ‘human blood’ potions that can be found in the Pale Lady’s secret room, or in Vicente Valtieri’s chest in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, but these are actual potions and are not the same as the blood potion.
The blood potion isn’t the only item that’s strangely rare in Oblivion. There’s only a single aqua silk hood in the game, which can be found in the living quarters of Anvil’s Mages Guild.
More items to display around my shack on the Imperial City Waterfront.
