Summary
If you’ve been lugging around a two-handed greatsword inOblivion Remastered, hoping to relive the glory days as a knight in dirty, scamp-stained armour, but felt that something was slightlyoff, you’re not alone.
u/Gonarhxus felt the same way, so they booted up the original game and started hacking away at a training dummy. They found that two-handed weapons are “way slower” in the remaster, attaching a side-by-side comparison for r/ElderScrolls to prove it.
It’s most obviosu with the Dai-Katana but I’ve tried comparing the Ebony Claymore and Volendrung too and they also feel a lot slower.
It’s worth noting that Oblivion is a very old game, and if you run it past 60fps on a modern rig, it messes with the speed. That means weapons swingmuchfaster than they should. So, the video embedded below isn’t entirely representative of the difference. That being said, u/Gonarhxus capped their frames-per-second in another test and found that two-handed weapons are “still noticeably slower in Remastered”.
“The Range Is Also Reduced”
Granted, not everyone is upset with the change. A heavy weapon feels heavy, it makes sense. And as some noted in the comments, a big complaint with Oblivion was how floaty and weightless its combat was, and this seems like a conscious tweak on Virtuos' behalf to amend that. The problem is that it leaves two-handed weapons disproportionately weaker than other gear.
One of the worst changes, makes two-handed weapons completely pointless in 99.9% of cases.
There’s an easy solution, though: “If the DPS were higher and blocking was quicker it would be fine,” u/Gonarhxus suggested. It’s a idea many others have echoed, especially given that you can’t wield a shield when using two-handed weapons. With the slight delay before you can act again after swinging, that leaves you incredibly vulnerable.
Fans are still waiting for the game’s first patch, so it might be a while before Virtuos addresses the complaints about two-handed weapons, if it ever does. In the meantime, there’s not much reason to use them. You’re much better off grabbing aone-handed weapon and shield, since it allows you to block and you deal far more damage.
