The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredwas successful for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it gave fans of the series something to enjoy during the long wait for The Elder Scrolls 6. It also gave fans of the original a new and enhanced way to experience the original. Lastly, because so many of its mechanics are deeper than those ofSkyrim, it also brought in a number of new fans.
Comparing the enhanced visuals of the remaster to iconic locations and characters from the original has brought a lot of joy to Elder Scrolls fans. While the community is quite happy with the passion that clearly shines through the remaster, it seems there is one instance where fans prefer the originalOblivionversion.
The Troll Toll
Trolls can be found all over the continent in the Elder Scrolls series. Who remembers having to defeat a rather tough one on your way up to theThroat of the Worldin Skyrim? These creatures have a unique design in the series, with three eyes and an especially menacing face. However, the devs of the remaster decided to change it up dramatically, even obscuring the iconic third eye.
During the quest where you go into the painted world in Oblivion Remastered, you’ll actually find the original design for the troll, albeit in painted form. Veteran fans were glad to see this version of the creature in the remaster, but wondered why the design was changed so much.
“First mod I want for the remake: HD original trolls,” said one of the comments, clearly longing for original design. “I don’t understand why they made them into gorillas and obscured their third eye. Baffling choice,” wondered another. Someone even joked about it, saying “Bethesda was trolling us.”
It’s unclear why Bethesda saw it fit to completely reinvent how trolls look for the remaster. They now look more like apes and the third eye isn’t very visible either. “It’s a good looking model, but it looks nothing like an Elder Scrolls Troll,” said another comment. “They look like hairy Warhammer Orcs. The original design is much more unique looking.”
