Take one glance at the subreddit, or any community forum right now, and you’ll see countless posts sayingOblivion does this and that better than Skyrim, whether it’s the magic, quests, or skills. But even Oblivion fans are starting to get exhausted by all the comparisons; “Stop posting Skyrim hate posts,“u/Pretend-Ad-3954 called on the community. “It’s pathetic […] Oblivion is amazing, Skyrim is amazing, Morrowind is amazing. When will you all realise that each game has qualities that the others don’t?”
With nearly 6,000 upvotes at the time of writing, it’s clearly a sentiment that many share. “We should be thankful that we have 3 excellent games in the same setting, that all play completely different from one another,” u/Dmbender said. “Not many fanbases get that.”
I’m old enough to remember the ‘Morrowind is a true RPG’ posts all over forums when Oblivion was the new game on the block.
“I can’t stand the ‘Skyrim shallow Oblivion deep’ crowd,” u/Escapist-Loner-9791 said. “Like, I’m sorry, have you SEEN Oblivion’s dungeons? The vast majority of them having nothing of note in them, and are so copy-paste-y that they might as well have been procedurally generated. Fans Are Itching To Play Skyrim After Oblivion Remastered
The upside of this conversation is that it’s enticing people to dig back into The Elder Scrolls and all it has to offer, including Skyrim, drumming up an interest in the series after so many years of laying dormant (at least, insofar as main games are concerned). “Playing Oblivion Remastered has rekindled my love for both games, and I’m definitely playing more Skyrim after this!” u/orion19819 said.
“Every time I see the aurora in the sky over the Jerral Mountains or look at the Throat of the World, I get a longing to pick Skyrim back up,” u/EconomyPrize4506 added. “I’m definitely going back to Skyrim after I beat Oblivion.”
I like that they’re different enough that I’m not bored switching between the two, same thing with Morrowind.

It was bound to happen. For a lot of people, Oblivion may as well be a new TES game, and seeing how many ideas were left behind for Skyrim (like spell crafting and hand-to-hand combat), it makes sense that they’d pit the two against each other. But for the sake of fairness, Bethesda, you need to remaster Morrowind already so we can have the same conversation again in a few years, just with Oblivion in Skyrim’s shoes — oh my god, they cut levitating!?
