After what felt like years of demands,Activisionfinally gave in earlier this week when it announced that it would be separating pastCall of Dutytitles from itsrather infamous COD HQ launcher. Specifically, it made bothModern Warfare 2 (2022)andModern Warfare 3 (2023)separate downloads.
Beyond unshackling the games from HQ and freeing up hard drive space, the separation of past CODs has also led to visible player counts, and, well, let’s just say it’s not pretty.
These Versions Of Modern Warfare Seemingly Don’t Have The Same Fanfare As The OGs
Taking to SteamDB, a website that houses player counts, update history and more for games on Steam,Modern Warfare 2 has peaked at 4,407 players, with around 3,300 actively gaming as of this writing.
Meanwhile,Modern Warfare 3 sits a tad bit lower, with a peak of 3,708 and an active player base of around 3,200.
For what it’s worth, they’re not bad by any means, but for games that are rather recent, they aren’t particularly good, either. Other gamers who are active in these titles have noticed that 10v10 games have become increasingly harder to find, a sign that the player base is beginning to wean.
That said, the player counts shouldn’t be all too surprising at this point,as Black Ops 6 also had to contend with some rather shocking drops. Only time will tell if Black Ops 7 is the type of game that can resurrect things. What’s more, whether Activision will also separate it from the HQ launcher, where we’ll have access to accurate data.
